The bloke sounds like a meat headed **** sack...people just take the piss ...bosses bank politicians even my kids !!!!!

Been took for 600 quid and 8k mate.
It's the nature of the game.
Go round and keep going round. Early morning.
Late evening.
When his.missus is home and he's not.

Pm me the name.of.the guy / company please.

Nearly every contractor I know has been had at one time or another a relation of mine is chasing 32k at the moment.

I'd go round to the customers house and see if the builder has been payed and explain your situation.

If you were given time sheets you should have filled them in. The builder should also have been registered a contractor and deducted cis tax from you @20%.

The bloke sounds a complete w@?!3r but they are about and that's how they make money. As you have not done any time sheets or invoiced him there is no paper trail really so you might just have to put this one down to experience?

As there's no paper trail or anything you could invoice him for £5k if you want (or £4999 if you wanna go small claims - I think it's got to be under £5k) :RpS_thumbup:
Or ask the customer to pay you directly and you could safely add 50% to what you've been charging the builder.

**** the legal route, don't work! Go knock several shades of shite out of him, and when ur tellin him he owes what he owes, don't forget to put compensation on what he owes u. If he owes u £800, it has now gone up to £1600 for the hassle he has caused u. If he still refuses to pay up, sell the debt to a debt shark

Mmm if it were only that simple, but anything is worth a try.. People need paying

Its not simple but it sure is effective. Does carry risks of getting in trouble with the law but it just depends on how much money is owed to u and how desperate u need it. I'm quite lucky tho, never bin knocked, had people try their luck but I always get paid, got a gd track record and hope to continue it

Its not a lot compared to some. I had a 12k wrangle a couple of years back. You have no solid claim to the money based on what you say. He thinks you dragged it out basically and its your word against his. No contract no substance.

Is he hard ? If not fill him in or do the hacking off the walls thing. Its quite satisfying

Wouldn't do the hacking off the wall thing, it's unfair on the customer and all she/he has to do is ring the law nd ur done for criminal damage. Your issue is with the contractor, keep it that way.

If you want to go down the legal route then you have to operate legally yourself. So if there's no quote, and no invoice then it never happened. If you're getting paid £120:00 a day cash in hand, and you start a claim saying that then you can expect HMRC to take a sudden and very detailed look at your finances. They'll no doubt be putting a hefty bill your way too.

Take it as a lesson learned.

It winds me up when I hear people moaning about being ripped off, cowboys, dodgy builders etc only to find they're working for cash in hand and dodging their commitments to tax etc. If you can't be arsed paying you way why should anyone else?

Hang about mate. Just because he was getting cash doesn't mean he wasn't declaring it.
So step back.

He asked for adivce on getting paid. If he isn't pay g tax it doesn't mean some can rip him off.
2 wrong don't make a right.

But getting hold of him does. :)

No it doesn't justify someone ripping him off, but if you're ripping someone off, operating with no paper work, and getting paid cash in hand then you're leaving yourself wide open.

other than the customer seeing me on his job I have nothing on paper that says I've worked for him.

£120 a day in hand.

However, if you operate your business properly then the small claims (money online) is very effective and just one avenue that a legitimate business can use. The only recourse open to someone not operating legitimately is complaining on a forum or going toe to toe with the contractor. The forum option won't help, and toe to toe can end badly.

Loosing £800:00 is a harsh way to find out that it's better to operate legitimately.

LOL!

I got my last weeks pay.

I phoned the customer directly and explained the situation, although she said she didnt want to get involved she did say that he would be coming round the next day and I could meet him there. so I got there really early and had a cuppa with the customer talked about the job etc and then he knocks, she lets him in, he walks into the kitchen and i'm sitting there dunking a digestive. I explained I was there to collect my money and he was nice as pie, he started moaning about cheques not clearing / his bank was playing up blah blah.
He then pulls out a fat wedge, gives me a little slice and I was on my way. the bloke wasnt the full shilling, there was no mention of the phone call on the last day where he was slagging me off and then once he paid me he started telling me about more jobs he had on that needed plastering. I was expecting fisti-cuffs and all sorts but it was all very amicable and weird. If I never see the bloke again it'll be too soon.

I can't remember who said what, but i wasn't paying materials, but i did have to grab a few extra beads pva etc and over 3 weeks I had £28 worth of receipts which I did get in the end.
I declare all my tax.
and I ain't from poland!

cheers.

I've got a 4 bed you can skim for £1800 if you want, not far from stansted so you can fly back to Warsaw every night. Oh, by the way, if you got kids there I can arrange a nice monthly bonus for you as well :RpS_laugh:
