for the M/T lads, which one do you use ?? I dont know the difference between durasoft, gold, etc... Im happy with what I use, just wondered what others prefered....

I always use carbon m/t . I get a 14 x4 3/4 wooden handle and cut half inch off either end the reason for that being the 13x5 is good on length but I find 5inch wide a bit numb for skimming. Wet and dry to sharpen the the blade and away we go. I get it so far ( broken in) then start on another and rotate them. I don't like perma shape trowels (unless for sand and cement) cos I think they bend the blade to far and say if you've got a 13 you only use 11 of it on spread

I use the Mt cement trowel 14/4.3/4 I like it because nothing has been done to it so I can shape it to how I use it takes a while to break in but they piss about with the other trowels to much

13×5 golden stainless for laying on usually. Finish with nela s*p*r*lex. Sometimes lay on with refina s*p*r*lex and then finish with the nela s*p*r*lex. Gone off the 5 inch wide blades.
Got all sizes of marshalltown from 8-16Inch and all the nela s*p*r*lex range. Probably got 15 trowels in total. The Ox range of trowels look good and then theres Kraft and Goldblatt also.
I think for finishing the Nela s*p*r*lex are great trowels. Got a new 18inch to try out tommorow.

I sense marshalltown will be launching cork handles soon... way way better than anything... although I have not use a wooden handle one... yet

Personally I think the M/town basswood handle is probably the best trowel handle there is, I've doctored one with a chisel to fit the s*p*r*lex.

14 permashape, would love a mt with a cork handle similar to the nela, never been a fan of the wooden handle

I don't like the cork handle, I like the Marshall handle, this conversation may change in a couple of years, the s*p*r*lex are here to stay, the are handy .

Mt14 ss permashape, however just brought a 16 premium and 16 s*p*r*lex so will see how that goes, will keep you posted,:RpS_thumbup:

keeping on with this, whats the stainless '' gold '' compared to the normal stainless ?? this is the normal unworn in, not the permashape...

The gold stainless is apparently better grade steel and there is also a flat trowel which is supposed to stay flat and keep its shape even when used to hard trowel.
Some marshalltown trowels end up looking like bananas once worn in.
There should be some sort of information of the marshalltown website.

Last time I used a MT was about 13 years ago when I had a SS 13". I couldn't get on with it as I kept catching the heal. Bought a Tyzack Centenary double tang after that and have had a few. Still got my last one which took a long while to break in (nearly chucked it at one point). Now use the Nela and my Tyzack is a spare or for when I need to put a bit more pressure one. Modern Tyzacks are shït (you don't need to ask me about them :rolleyes)) had reports of some MT's bending the wrong way and not tried any of the smaller ones. Handled Ox and felt they were a bit numb, never tried Kraft but apparently they are the same.
My favourite trowel was a carbon steel one that we got free some years ago that was very flexible, I cut it down after it split and ended up splitting past the tang - chucked it when it became unusable - hence why I love the s*p*r*lex - not as flexible but just nice.
