You can trim the back of them off easy enough with a hand saw.

Yeah I make my own coin cutter and use that, I use to do them freehand I think this way is a bit quicker

I've done them before with a beveled and planed piece of timber,the quoin cutters aren't expensive though I've just never acquired one.

As kgreigh said beveled timber Priceplaster it's something I never thought of buying myself maybe because we're not doing quoins everyday, I'll upload a picture in a bit for u priceplaster, it will give you an idea
