Overboard ceiling??

Hello,

Looking for some advice please! I had a leaking firewall in my top floor flat, looks like it’s been a problem for years and the previous owner never sorted it. Firewall has now been capped with felt and has new lead flashing on both sides, so I am hopeful that has sorted the issue, it’s been nearly a year and I’ve seen no new signs of damp on the inside.

About to do the internal repairs and my plasterer has advised to board over the ceiling rather and pull it down. I’m worried there might be mouldy insulation inside, as the ceiling is now bowing on one side I’m just worried it will look s**t. I want it done properly.

What would people advise? Here are some pics, they are going to remove the frame around the velux and box it in nicely, but as you can see the ceiling slopes to the left hand side of the window.

Why don't you cut a couple of inspection holes and get a torch in there...take a look see if there is insulation and the condition.

Insulated plasterboard (depending on ceiling height) may also be an option over the existing.

Need someone with a nugget to do so investigation and offer a practical solution. Unfortunately very rare. Most just want to slap it on.

Rip it down and start again! That way you know if there’s any issues that you can’t see!

End of the day, it's your job pal. If you want it ripping out then that's what you should ask for and your contractor price accordingly.
