I saw something on the internet the other day saying instead of knocking holes in a ceiling to find a joist when overboarding you can use a strong magnet to find the old screwheads and by this find the joists.....does anyone do it that way? Just out of interst really as I never would have thought of that.

Always cut wee holes and ping chalk line, sometimes check the middle of the line to make sure

And if it lends itself, I counter batten with 2x1 with a nail gun. Quicker all round

overboarding

I never overboard I always rip the whole ceiling down and re board.

I've thought of one of those stud/metal/electric sensor jobbies would be good to save on the mess. Came home black again today with knocking holes in lathe.

Neodymiam magnets are very strong...not advocating it just wondered if it worked.....would be a dust free job if it did.

Not guaranteed to find a centre of joist though most likely.
When butting 2 boards on a joist I couldn't trust the magnets to find the centre id have to knock a hole to be sure to be sure.

Lodan just get the hammer and

WHACK holes in the ceiling start at one end and work your way down each joist is a hammer width apart.

Just watch that the ceiling don't cave in and fall through to the ground floor.

Already weighed them up. Look at the bloody price!

Yeah, you can justify it if you're drilling into a lot of floors and walls. One drill or screw through a pipe or cable and £500 would be considered a cheap repair.

Not really worth it just for finding joists and studs though.
