Hi all,
I am having my house skimmed top to bottom , but I am confused on

  • How to start painting after the walls have been skimmed and if damaged plaster boards can be repaired.
  • I heard you need to preform a mist coat is this necessary ?

Is this the procedure to paint skimmed walls ?

  • Undercoat using white paint
  • two coats of emulsion ?

Thanks in advance for you help

He is skimming 3 bedrooms , landing , stairs , passage way and from reception room for £2,000 he is a good builder i have seen his work and is highly recommended.

give the new plaster a mist coat, mix the emulsion 50/ 50 with water, you will still see the pink plaster showing through. leave for 24 hours then give it two coats of a quality emulsion,
if you do not leave the mist coat it will take more coats of emulsion so you would be wasting your time and material.
the plaster is ready for decoration when it goes light pink with no dark pink patches.
i would employ a painter and decorater to get the best finish.

New plaster will suck the life out of paint, it then sits there like a skin. Mist coat it first and it soaks in giving a better surface to paint on.

If you dilute the paint 50/50 it will be dripping everywhere. 20% is more than enough. Use a non vinyl contract emulsion. Something like Dulux Supermatt or Glidden contract matt,

It all depends which brand you buy to how much you can water it down. For example, you buy b and q value and you don't have to add any water as it's thin as **** but you buy leyland trade out of b and q and you'll need to add at least 50%. What you want is the paint spreading freely across the fresh plaster without any lines being left. Too thin and there will be paint splashing everywhere and too thick you will struggle to spread it out evenly without ridges appearing that you will see as soon as a light is put across it. I use crown matt from b and q with a 20 % ratio or gliddens matt with 20 % ratio as well.
