Ok here's my 1st question.
Is it possible to plaster over tiles?
My parents want the bathroom replastering but it's tiled floor to ceiling
& my dad said he doesn't want the tiles taking off as the walls are paramount boards!
Never heard of paramount boards?
What are they?

So do i need to use bonding on the tiles & would it be ok to neat pva 1st or is this a no no?

Thanks in advance :)

have you ever used bond-it? when it first came out it was advertised as 'being used to skim over tiles' personally i'd take them off.

i know its pain, but i'd take the tlies off, make good with a tight coat of bonding and skim. if it makes a real terrible mess of the boards when you remove the tiles, reboard it.

a friend of mine had the same problem so he knocked all the walls off. 2 were brick and 2 were stud. took him a couple of hours. he got about 10 1800mmx900mm boards and it took me about 2/3 hours to use them. then all the walls were perfectly flat and square and tiling it was a doddle. are the walls being tiled floor to ceiling again?

errrr lads?
paramount boards are the old eggbox structures they used to use for walling, its like a kind of stud walling... if you can imagine 2 sheets of plasterboard with a hollow core 'cardboard' cellular structure with a timber perimeter youve got the idea.... its a bit like the pressed woodgrain effect hardboard doors, but with plasterboard instead of hardboard... ;)
if the tiles come off nastily chances are its a new wall and theyre only 3" thick in total so at some point theres going to be an issue with a door liner (well, very likely anyway)...

Im having to repair a lot of it at the minute, where the old 'warm air' ducts used to be...
what im doing is cutting some 2x1 longer than the width, jamming it into the hollow core and fixing it with a few drywall screws either side, then screwing some 1/2" board onto the 2x1 in the hole, scrim and skim..

if its being re-tiled, just tile straight over the top of em, no need to re-plaster, just make sure you get the right adhesive...

if not, get hold of some bonding agent and just skim it, one good coat of board finish, let it hazel off and give it another...

wickes do a bonding agent in small tubs for about 12 quid... does about 15m

Hi Steve no it's not being fully tiled it's only being tiled by the bath & shower area.

Hi Chris i see what you mean about the paramount boards now thanks
This is why my dad doesn't want the tiles off then.

I think i will give the bond it a whirl not used it before any tips?

Lol.
I don't wear a dress at work :)

the only thing with it is dont be tight and leave it for 24 hours to dry. you will have to leave it a while between skim coats aswell as theres not going to be much suction
