You can’t scribe it as then you’d have to remove material from the sides.

I have a section in the Chrispy house diary about fitting a fire surround, but it uses advanced technology called a straight edge at the plastering stage.

I'm really not sure that you would. The vertical gap either side look pretty much equivalent to the gap behind the mantle.

Maybe, maybe not. You can only remove material from the over hang of the mantle, so it’s not going to be a lot. May tighten it up a bit though.

Sorry about my earlier intemperant rant, fireplace safety is a big thing for me. If I really had to I'd reduce it on the corners including the legs in one hit, not dismantle it. Bu this is so little a caulk should do.
Trying to find a decent caulk at the mo for a skirting/architrave job tomorrow, but the write-ups on them all sagging or not bonding are pretty dire.
What is anybody using to grab-fix skirting? I like the cheapo look of the No Nonsense £1.95 one at Screwfix, (budget), but know the 20min Soudal one works.

Clear silicone, still the best for me.
