Re: Plasterers  or not ?

on the nvq 2 side of things, i am in the process of getting mine suppose to be government funded. i was told that i might not get it or i would have to pay for myself £500.00 it would cost me.
the reasons they told me were that the government gave money out to these training companies and these companies would give anybody a nvq just to get the numbers up and claim their share of the money.
i spoke to the guy who owns the business and he told me that last year they were going out to site to see joiners, dryliners, brickies ect watching them skim 1 wall, do a bit of boarding and maybe some patching and dishing these nvq's out.
now the government have capped the money and theres still un-qualified plasterers out there struggling for an nvq.
i have got 5 yrs behind me can do pretty much all the basics float & set, render ect, i would struggle with screeding as i aint done it alone and not for about 3 yrs. cant do fiberous stuff.

my old gaffer was oldskool and would not send me to college as he didn't want 2 people showing me how to do 1 job.

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

Ive got a laser Andy and could do it if it gets you out of trouble and show you how it s done at the same time.

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

i started plastering in the mid 80's with the old man and uncles, did all back then ,tacking, foalt & set, coving, screeding, artex and rendering...
what used to p*ss me off tho,was when working for firms, cus i could do float & set i'd get sent on some big sites where it was pretty much all hardwall and be given a crap price like £4.80m2,and yet the guys who could basically only skim were on jobs getting £3 m2.for just skimming so really the floating was for £1.80m2. couldn't get the ppl who was working for to see this,so ended up doing those jobs on a crap day rate and yet these trowelhands were earning good money....

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

true mate 100m of floatings hard work day in day out never mind the extra skill involved or just do 60m of skimming

If I couldn't cover all the aspects of the trade I wouldn't feel comfortable of taking whole jobs on, the times I've been let down by a screeder and just grabbed my tools and laid the bloody thing myself, once you do this they don't tend to let you down again for a while because they know the work isn't just waiting for them. Or a spread goes walkabout for a few days when there's a rush job on, I jump in and get some floating done to keep the job on track. Mind you I've just priced a job with a 200m2 suspended ceiling and I can't do that....oh crap now I'm worrying.
Lay in grid is easier than screeding a floor in my opinion mate you'll be alright

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

Thanks for all the advice and offers of help with the suspended ceiling, I wasn't planning on doing it myself. It's one of the grid and tile type of ceilings and have already had prices from a few firms to supply & fix. I didn't really have much choice but to take it on as the firm I'm dealing with like the plastering contractor to take on the plastering, tacking, drylining, screeding, insulation, metal stud and any suspended ceilings needed.

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

I hate screeds , never minded them before but just lately they hurt me .

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

In a lot of ways I wish I'd gone full time screeding years ago. Very few tools to carry and few problems caused by other trades to worry about, I used to lay up to 85 m2 a day labouring on myself and I wasn't doing it full time so I'm fairly sure I could have got quicker, think of all that money but no or very little job satisfaction.

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

Sparing is another thing alot of spreads cant do i work with another spread and he cant throw so i end up doing all the throwing and he lays on..... but i dont see him as not a spread as imo he is a s**t hot spread.

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

i get on my nerves when a so called plasterer who demands plastering rates says he cant do something. floorscreeds is something that a lot cant do. i love screeding, 100m2 in a day, £5.50m2 , pay labourer or any tom to push the readymix screed in for me , give them £50 and i get to keep the rest. tidy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Why ??? ???

I should imagine that when you spend that many weeks living in a youth hostel in Harlow at his age it must start to mess with your mind (thank God he didn't give Spunky a start on that job) ;)

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

Spunky went fishing today ...... wonder if he caught anything ???

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

Re: Plasterers  or not ?

caught loads i took my trusty whip.......aha!!..............caught nothing on the carp rods ....beeped a couple of times when the swans bumped the line ........lovely day though ......kids were smoking crack in the park , the sound of breaking glass and car alarms floating along the waves of joy ..............................
