Plastering depth on the reveals advice needed.

Hi all I am looking for some advice please.

Around the inside of the window in the bathroom was a wood surround but after taking it off I have found a 2 to 3 inch gap between the window frame and the bare block work behind. I need to plaster the reveals back out to the frame ready for tiling.

I will seal the block work with PVA first and then plaster the reveals back out with sand and cement and then skim with multi-finish plaster ready for tiling.

Is 3 sand to 1 cement OK for this?

How thick should each scratch coat be?

Can you please give me instructions on how to do the top/head window reveal and how do I get the sand and cement to stick, I have to build it out to 3 inches in thickness?

Be easier to dab plasterboard on the reveals to make up that depth, stick board beads on, patch back to plaster on face of the wall and skim reveals.

Just noticed your tiling, no need to skim just tile straight on the board.

thats the way you can build it out to whatever u like then easy in a fraction of the time if its too far for one board u can just stick 2 or 3 in, also the plaster board is nice and flat and ready to work on as soon as the dots have set, if customer wants it done in s&c make sure u charge them extra as it will slow you down

Good idea, but when they put the window in they used some 4 inch wide peaces of wood for packing that's the full width of the reveal. By all accounts the window fitters used only 1 screw to fix the packing and then the window is screwed to that. I can't board with the packing in place because I would lose to much window frame and I can't remove the packing because its the only thing that is holding the window in place. Any suggestions?

Do you recommend 1/2 or 1/4 inch plasterboard for the top/head reveal or doesn't it mater?

Will bonding plaster do to mount the board to the lintel and board to board or do you recommend something more suited to the job?

I will have to use maybe 5 pieces of plasterboard stacked, will that be strong enough to take the tiles OK?

Dont really understand what you mean regarding the wood??? putting some pictures up will help, and 12.5mm board and dry wall adhesive. and you dont need 5 boards 2 will be sufficient to make up 2-3 inches.
 
deffo need pics mate. that wood thing does'nt sound right, if its the full with of reveal can you not juat screw some board to it?
 
I only got the 1 photo before the battrey went. The packing you see are place all round the frame.

I ment to say the the screw in the photo is the only fixing to the wall and then the frame is fixed to the wood.
 
I would dot some smaller pieces of board inbetween the wood to pack it out then dot a full piece of bord over the lot as normal. Then tell your customer the window fitters want bumming with somthing sharp and rusty
 
Saw that wood off. The window isn't going anywhere as it's foamed in and probably rendered in from the outside too.
 
I have another 2 question.

What is the black backing plaster underneath the lime skimming made of?

If I hack off all the blown lime finish and leave the sound black backing plaster is it OK to PVA 2 coats of 3-1 and re-skim over ready for tilling?

Sounds like black ash mortar, skimmed over this a fair bit lately..suction is a killer on this, Evan after 3 coats of PVA can still kraze, I've started going over any areas where this is exposed with a tight coat of bonding now....

Sounds like the same stuf. What was the PVA mix that you used?

I have three whole walls to skim over and then tile on top. After you do a tight skim of bonding do you do the finish skim the same day or can it be left for a few days and then given a coat or two of PVA before the skim coat?
 
I agree with spunky , only asking for proble.s in the future , for the sake of it a would board it al, out , piece of mind and they are problebly spending a lot on the bathroom so mite aswell get the basics right
