skimming2day its true what you say about search engines.... but in small niches like plastering where your not competing as such with marketers, then it should be fairly stable :-) Although it has gone tits for me in the past.

Agree that you should never put all your eggs in one basket :-)
 
Danny.the paper work is mass.#With the new scheme the college employs them and you apy the college i think it was £102 a week,and you have to insure them do the H n S and the risk assessments rubbish.To much so i sent them running......... what s an OSAT mate ?

I quoted the other day to do a large living room and ensuite bathroom, walls only for £390. Mats were about £70.

I was a bit expensive as it was only a couple of days work . I was told someone was going to do it for £200.

Im more than happy to let someone else do it for that price.

Ill just change some taps for the same money and not get dirty!!

I think £390 was cheap...id get that for one room 5 year ago in the boom no problem,all day long. "when can you start mate"
But ive skiimmed 2 rooms for £400 in recent months cus it £400 or £000
 
Yep its a joke.... my uncle has to have all the H&S stuff as well .... the best one was teh risk assessment where he was asked what risk would there be to a burgular if they broke in..... he simply said me working late :-)

OSAT = On site assessment test they come out and see if you can spread then you get an NVQ.... I got mine some years ago now but I have heard since that a few of my friends have got them without a site visit which is bad :-(
 
Just read this thread from start to finish & if a member of the public/potential customer reads this(which they will) they'll be rubbing their hands!
Customers will read "desperate" "no work" "£80 a day"
So to be honest threads like this don't help the trade either.
Maybe keep threads like this in private members area.
 
Nisus i know what ur saying mate about the bad vibes but thr chances of a punter walking on here looking for a spread and one off us GOOD guys getting the work is about as remote as finding Rocking horse s h i t.
Ill add to that it might also make coursers think twice about starting onto a trade wher euntill they can bang a room out a day to a a1 standard which they wont for a long time and only get £80 for there effort instead of £0000000s we all used to get becuse we were in demand

Funny you should say that though mate I quoted a job yesterday for a guy who contacted me from this forum.
He was reading on here & clicked the link to my website & rang me.
That's why it made me think that customers are reading posts like this mate.
 
Yeah yeah with ur key words and Dannys magic you might get a few bits mate.Generally im talking.Also to be honest mate ive had a real sh it past few days so im a bit down and grumpy work is slow my missus and 3 kids have left me and moved in with her mothers cus we been arguing and to top it all off my local off license has just shut down.
It cant get no worse surely.

However I think the general public needs educating, I asked Janes dad how much he would expext to pay to skim the kitchen ceiling... not massive but a fair sized lid he said £60 - £80 I was like haha yeah off you go then....

Maybe people need educating about how to spot a s**t plaster?

whats worst than a chancer charging less than a s**t hot plasterer is a chancer getting same work for same job just done to s**t standard..

I have been following industry rates for years. They have been available since before most of us were born and the fact that no one on here even knows about it is proof it will never work.
cost analysis of plastering rates have been studied and published for years in many book forms such as laxton/spon/bcis/rics etc reviewed and published every single year they are the closest thing you will get to fair rates as the data comes from such people as davis langdon and the royal institute of chartered surveyors and every plastering or construction system or method has been considered on big and small measure, new build or refurb.

I have a handy van dashboard size version of spon for decorating and plastering wich even gives rates for room sizes on re-skim for domestic aswell as price rates.

All measured rates are worked back from a plasterers hourly rate and broken into time sections for for how long it takes to do a square meter or L/m depending on the task so every rate can be worked back to the trade hourly rates given by ucat or bcis they always have been worked back from hourly wage rates but if everyone on here looked at the book I recon most would say "I wouldnt get out bed for that" and one or two would say "ive been getting ripped off all these years"

these rates have been available for everyone to follow they cover your labour and material costs and show company OaP if you are a contracting firm but hardly anyone follows this guide for different reasons. the building cost books are hundreds to buy but if you can find the smaller version that only covers your trade then they are much cheaper

where people are mainly self emp it is roller coaster industry and always will be

P.S. you wont get anywhere near the book rates at the moment on site the prices are too high

I do not buy into this thread will damage us , those who visit the site who are not in the trade and think they can chip us down are in for a rude awaking.
Most domestic work come's from word of mouth do you know a good Reliable Plaster not a cheap plaster reason been we all like tell people I had this done or that done and he was really good I am please with what he has done. Then comes the price and the price depends only on the budget we have at that time . Some may think I did not think it would be that much but never the less can still afford to have it done and do. What matters you do a good job. Word of of mouth is every thing your word is your bond none of us like been pissed about waiting in for people. Those who try and chip you down most times do not
really have the money to pay you and are just chancers anyway. Once you start off cheap you will known as a cheap spread and find it hard to put your price up with folks thinking you do cheap jobs .

We are all different with regards to how much cash we need each week to live on that I understand. Me well I suppose am middle age and my house is paid for kids have long gone but can still be a drain on my pocket. In fairness I can manage on a small amount of money each week and can sit it out if need be. So I am
not really hurting like some of you and suppose I should not really comment unless I have walk in your shoes for a day. You have to do what you have to do to turn a coin and talk is cheap when your not on hard times.
