whats t/j? :-\

tony, this may sound stupid because ive never done tape and joint. but a, how do you do a butt joint? and b, if you do it by just blending it, wouldnt the wall then be uneven?

With a butt joint, I will make the finished joint double the width of a tapered joint to feather it out. If I had boarded the place, I would have staggered the joints, but i'm only taping it. The 'builders' boarded it and left plenty of screws sticking out and areas un nogged.

how much does it stick out all together then tony? surel it would bulge out slightly if you put a straight edge on it?

If the boarding is spot on, then only 2-3 mm at most.

It would be more noticeable if there was a hardwood skirting and the top wasn't caulked. Generally once it's all painted it doesn't stand out. As always, it depends who's boarded & taped it.

Butt joints done well dont notice atall if ime doing a top clas job i run a skim above and below the joint about a foot apart and when gone of fill that then feather the outer edges rub down and go over the lot again and rub down, you end up with a band about a metre wide so dosent notice but half the time it would be quicker to skim it but people wont listen.
