How does the plastering trade compare to other trades such as sparky heating/ air con etc on wages

Currently working as a heating engineers mate and if i stick at it theyll hopefully offer me an apprenticeship eventually but that could be a while away but ive just applied for a fibirous plasterer apprenticeship and all being well if i get an interview for that it could be a new career but is it worth it? Plastering does interest me because once i get good enough in say 10 years of experience i could set up for myself then but is the money still good as a good plasterer?

Thanks in advance

I don't know if you're trade is protected, I assume it is, because heating involves electricity and safety issues.

Plastering doesn't have any protection in terms of certificates etc So anyone can claim they're a plasterer, hence the popularity of courses that 'teach' people to become plasterers in a weekend or a week.

Personally I don't think there's anything preventing rates coming down even more, and the big contractors know they can squeeze us more and more. Whereas other trades are protected and they organise together to resist these changes. I don't see that happening with spreads, it's a culture of 'I'm alright Jack'.

To sum up your question , I would advise you to go down the line your currently working in as the plastering trade has been on the incline for a while and as no indication of picking up in the near future

general plastering is on its arse, fibrous is a different ball game. im a fibrous hand, although i dont do any these days, and we got well paid for what we do, i use to do a lot for the national trust.
As said plasterings on the decline, but if you can specialize in one aspect of plastering or rendering youll do alright.

build up a good reputation in whatever trade you decide to do , be honest , loyal , reliable and hardworking , failing that become a plumber and earn a fortune

Fibrous plastering is a niche market so if you can get involved go for it. Learn it well and research your market and you'll do alright :RpS_thumbup:

there is a lot off money in fibourous mate and a killing if you get on like a big statley home but as for plastering its a pain cause theres always some divvy who will work for 50 quid a day so you just have to be patient but build up a good rep and you will be fine

there is only one plasterer in carlisle and surrounding area that i know of and he is 78 years old, who does the fibrous work travelled all over the world doing cornices etc always busy , been to hong kong/america/all over, a very experienced good plasterer who seen these problems in plastering/building trade coming years ago, but for many years now he has concentrated on the fibrous side, i have seen some of his prices good money too, good luck to him, in my opinion this is a huge market, by all means kyle343 go into plastering gain experience in all aspects of plastering but as owls rightly says specialise in one type fibrous or rendering, but in your case this choice is years away, you have got to learn how to use a handboard and trowel first,

Deffo fibrous even as a heating engineer unless you're running you're own business you get mugged off regardless of trade
