Prepping for tyrolean

I have a job booked in work to plaster a brick wall and provide a tyrolean finish. Just wondering what the best way to prep the wall for the tyrolean is? I was thinking a scratch coat first, then a 2nd coat which I'll screed off and devil float? Any replies would be appreciated

Never done it before and happy to give it a go, no paying customer involved and it's only a small area so I don't see the problem. Not that I have to explain myself to you. Cheers for the reply though

Finish as good a possible your second coat ! The main thing is your mix you need a good suction for tyrolean

Small area, don't rush the coats of Tyrolean , will puddle and get lime bloom

Stop talking s**t even it’s a waste of time f**k**g about getting the perfect float for tyroleon you don’t see any of the background once finished and it will fill as you build up between coats..i 3 coat it first coat at 45 degree angle same with second coat then a direct light coat direct straight on for final build up..done loads of full houses by hand over the years if you have never done it before either watch a plasterer who knows what he is doing or else you will f**k it up..it’s not as simple as it looks

Am talking s**t ? It’s standard practice make each process neat and get the best results ? Tyrolean won’t cover a poor base coat and it’s much easier to go over a flat base why try and use the tyrolean to cover issues makes no sense

Not disagreeing but depends on the building , have done a few walls and a cottage one coat sc , cheap, cheap situation ,
The texture choice can aid in disguising poor surface of the render so spend more time on the render and save on the Tyrolean , either way

More bullshit ..look you can tyrolean over most backgrounds weather it’s a straight wall a f**k**g 200 year old cottage there is a big difference between “flat” and “level” as long as the background is floated to a half decent finish the tyrolean will cover it..if you build out with 3 coats you will get a uniform finish so stop flapping your gums and listen to the advise..trust me you are wasting your time and money f**k**g about with your float because you will not see the background!
 
if the floating coat is poor quality it will be hard work to get the tyrolene to look good. It does not cover sins as easy as you think, if you want to do that you need something like roughcast.

Why be so aggressive? I never asked for advise pal just gave my opinion and think making your base neat is the correct way as it doesn’t cost anymore money or time so why not ?
 
Cheers for the replies all, much appreciated. I agree with Lox on this one, surely it's better to get the background as neat as i can if it's not going to take me much more time. I do think some of you need to tone it down a tad though, it's ok to have a difference of opinion we all have our own way of doing things. I have been plastering for 10 years but have never done tyrolean, i work for a housing association and this is the 1st time I've had a tyrolean job, hence why I asked for some advice on here. Only way to learn is to give it a go I say.

Let me tell you a little story...when I first started out in the game the man who taught me told me to never make the game any harder than what is already is.And you no as well as I know how f**k**g hard the game is along with every other plasterer out there..
When I said that tyrolean does not need the perfect float I was trying to save you a bit of wasted time and effort not trying to make you look like a c**t..
If you are putting a texted coat over a “substrate” you do not need the 5 star float because I will say again as long as the background is hollow free the tyrolean build up will cover it I don’t give a s**t what anyone else says because I’ve been doing it that way for over 20 years and it works.plasterers are a finishing trade yes I agree to a certain extent about the background but seriously mate stop pissing about ;)
 
The whole house was done quite thick with tyrolean it almost looks like rough cast. As long as the wall I redo looks something similar I'll be happy, it's only a small outside boundary wall I'm doing, plus it will get painted to match the existing once I've done my bit anyhow. Hopefully I get beginners luck and it turns out half decent! Didn't like to tell my boss I cant do tyrolean finish, doesn't look very good on me, but I just genuinely have never done it before apart from giving it a go once when I was in college.

Don’t be worried about it mate trust me don’t f**k about with the float to much..I remember my first tyrolean job years ago thinking to myself I hope I don’t f**k this up..trust me you can’t go wrong..you want a nice strong mix for your tyrolean mix if doing it in sand/cement don’t worry about putting water proofer or additives into tyrolean mix because it will look shite ..you need a bit of suction when coating up..do it in 3 passes too at an angle then go face on with it after to get the build up..don’t rush it or hang about too long on the same area..consistency is the key when turning the handle of gun make sure you move with it because it will pool up ..when taking out of the mixer into bucket add a splash of water and give the mix a quick stir then pour little amount into gun I’ve got money on you not too f**k this up so make sure you send in your pictures when the job is finished so I can have a look at your masterpiece;)

This forum is great for getting decent advice there are some good lads on here that know what they are on about and quite a few chancers you will soon weed out the beginners..
 
Yeah I've read a few different threads since joining and like you said theres a lot of good advice on here from plasterers who clearly know their onions, nothing wrong with asking for advice when you're not sure about something is there. I consider myself a decent plasterer so I'm sure i will be able to offer so advice/input on here in the future. Great helpful forum to be part of in my opinion, and some decent banter too!

Pleased that's sorted , now have you had any experience of dabbing with foam adhesive ?

Nothing wrong with asking how to do jobs you have not done before mate I’ve combined years experience with working with other plasterers over the years..the more you can learn the better we become none of us are ever too old to learn something new.the trouble is the pig headed element amongst us that think they know it all .i will always listen and learn off the genuine plasterers that know the score I can spot a fake on here from a mile away
