We have an article about subcontractors on our website that might help. Basically if you provide your own tools/materials and work under your own direction, you are a bona-fide subcontractor and should still have your own insurance. If you are instead employed for labour purposes and tools/materials are not yours then you won't need your own insurance but your employer should provide public and employers liability for you.
