How the hell do people make these kind of brick style patterns on houses? they are deep brick lines not just drawn on. and they can even use a bead on the door ways as the brick pattern would't allow it.

just looks reali nice but cant get my head around how its all done
sorry this is a crap photo not quite the style im on about. im on about the full brick affect

Ive only even done a fireplace in render ,done it with render dye (cementone red ) to make a soft red brick affect ,tin foil and straight edges on the corners cut the joints with a steady hand then pointed up with normal render next day, i think there are products out there now that achevie the same finish easier ,but ive never used them prolly never will.

i'd have thought youd knock that out with an ashlar cutter, think thats how they do it on the krend, run it down a straight edge, dunno how they did it on the old render in days of yore...
ive seen your borders with the old plumbers former church... surley you'd p'ss that?

i think they used battens years back to create block effect (ashlar ) , i thought oasis was taking about brick affect ??? i suppose if the brick is painted the you could run it

anyone clock that other grand designs one where they did the 'art deco' house frontage...
curved entrance about 2 foot radius with bands about a foot apart...
they did it by knocking up some curved plywood bands to fit round the first coat, set em up dead plumb and filled em in.. looked smart when it was done..

Ashlar can be made to look like most shapes and sizes provided its set out properly. Pargetting now thats a little too far IMHO but each to their own.

what exactly is pargetting? anyone feel like explaining it to me? i keep hearing the term but i havent got the first idea what it means?
sorry not trying to hyjack your thread oasis, im assuming its a similar sort of thing?

Never saw that one mate , but im sure back in the day plasterers and carpenters worked hand in hand to get a finish like that 8)

haven't clicked on the picture, but looking at it i think they are pre cast in sand and lime, or sand and cement. then stuck on the face of the building. repaired some of this type of work. ok if a corners broke, but if a whole brick section comes away, they make a mould and stick the new piece on.

Now thats a tin of worms Chris ..... look on Andys web site thats pargetting , anything like running molding pattens ,to drawing freehand on renders and printing onto renders covers parge work, but only free hand and real tools not using mats.

ooooohhh... riiiggghhhttt.... will do...

ive got a funny feeling flexcement is pargetting? right? god i feel a right dumb f'cker ;D

i think del has hit the spot. yea its to neet to be free hand but 2 detailed in places to be batten out. an yea blocks not bricks lol

45 degree ashlar joints church...

anyone else tried to load up andys site? keeps freezing? just had 3 goes and had to shut down the internet everytime.. must be gettin sh'tloads of hits..

Pargetting is "to render using raised patterns and/or imprinted patterns" the stuff on my website is really basic stuff I must get round to getting some pictures of some more detailed work.
Simply was right as to how most ashlar work is now done, but ashlar work has been done for many many years before monocouche was available. Some was done using basically the same method as with mono and some was done using battens, even the detailed work was done using battens Oasis.

nice one...
theres a house in whaplode been there years... looks exactly like a timbered house olde worlde stylie...
but its render.... nothing fancy just old bog standard render painted black and white...
you can tell its render cos one corners got a chip missing out but the rest is sound.... really been there yonks too... ill take a picture next time im up there if i remember the camera...
pargetting eh? got a bloody name for it now! ;D

I live near Cheltenham and about 70% of the buildings are like this one, they used angled battens to achieve the look. Love to have a go but unfortunatley the old boys knew exactly what they were doing and many of these buildings are exactly the same as when they went up. SOLID old builds

it is cut out with a small margin trowel its called rustication you dont need battens cut by hand is much neater

thats ok for small areas grand, I would think though when youve say a 10 metre long wall to do it would be battens surely?

the guy at ramboo tools sells quoin cutters they look good got a spirit level on them too £50 or adjustable one for £70 , nice fella to buy from as well.

kool, rite love were having corner stones in the livin room now!

wonder how the hell he finishs it after.. ie render smooth up 2 the blocks.

an i guess if you did a huge wal like this u would use some angled battons

ive been doing some similar work but ive been using brick -rend great stuff you apply a grey base coat when its just about took you apply a top coat there are a few different colours then you cut your brick pattern i use the metel strapping that pallets of block come on and you simply cut away the top coat so the grey base is shown looks great have a look on k-rends site see what you think
