Refina Plastic trowel

You are correct, but sometimes it's near impossible I'm sure you'll agree.

After a few weeks with it I think this: 1st, 2nd coat and flatten with steel, then 2 wets and dry with plastic.

I'm still trying to find it's niche, it does have one.

I feel that the sponge should be stronger in compression and the plastic 20% more rigid. Then like you say, it would take the shapes out of the wall.

1st coat - spat - 2nd coat - spat - wet trowel - plazzi ( before plaster dries too much)

60% of the time it works every time.

So you 2 coat it then give it 1 wet trowel.......finished?

The second spat is as good as a trowel. Give it time then a wet trowel. Then each wall/ceiling at a time plastic straight after the wet trowel. If its a slow set then one more wet trowel. Works for me.

What do you spat it with?

24" normal spatula that I've sharpened with a diamond file. It's as sharp as a good trowel. Leaves no lines. Probably just works the same as a s*p*r*lex spat.

Ok, so 1st coat....spat....2nd coat....spat....wet trowel with steel...plastic trowel......(then if slow) another wet trowel with steel/plastic?

Exactly that! Surely it can't just work for me. It's definitely down to timing with the plazzi. It's pointless when the sets gone too far. May aswell just use steel.

Never counted. It's easier and finishes quicker. You stick with whatever works for you Danny. Each to there own marra!

Yeah seems so, easier i mean. I'm less happy with the flattness of the finish though.

Yeah, it's filled and smooth but not always completely flat.

Regardless of that, it does have a place in my tool bag. I've just not yet figured out how to use it best whilst still achieving my required finish.

just trowel as normal then use the plastic for a dry trowel but u can use it when the gear is a bit wetter. still no point but thats all its good for

Jr you don't really need water with em just brush the plastic with water then cross trowel if it furs up the plasters still to wet

yeah ive been useing mine for a little while now but still not got to grips with it as easy as my old one, i actually got my old barton trowel out the other day for a double winder and it came out mustard diddnt give it a single wet trowel just a couple of dry ones and it finished the nuts, plus the barton is more flexible than the refina so it followed the shape of the winder dream

Ill try one of those Barton ones next I broke another plastic sleeve today putting my tools on the van

haha look after them and they will look after me and my family thats the way i see it mate, plus the plastic on the barton is alot softer than the refina so it needs all the protecting it can get, bit i still reckon its better than the refina if i could get a better handle on it, it would be the best one for finishing plaster imo

I only use it for the 1st water, like danny says its finding which time to use it, Got it stuck on the wall the first couple of times i use it, it was a nightmare trying to pull it off the wall had to slide it in the end, proper school boy error.......:RpS_blushing:

i found out to my error using them too early in the set causes wavy ripples down the wall which look shite in the wrong light

Then spoke to a lad who has used em for yrs said get wall 90% finished and flat before you start with the plastics. I only use em now on final 2 trowels now

works best on the final trowel or dry trowel or polish trowel...I've found em a nightmare to maintain tho...they are prone to fine hairline scratches frm brushes etc which can appear in the finish if your not carefull...does anyone know how to get these out?? got 2 which are scratched beyond use...

i pup TNT in a bucket full of skim, run out of the room and detonate it, then trowel up with my 8ft straight edge bluetacked to the end of a pole :flapper:
