Removing gypsum skim from lime plaster

Hello I’m renovating an old farmhouse and a numpty has skimmed walls with gypsum plaster. I’m painstakingly cleaning it off by trying light steaming and gentle scraping, but wonder if there is a method whereby I can soak it to break the bond and scrape it off. Bit more easily? The walls will be wonky and uneven but will at least breathe. I’m patching with a lime filler. Thanks for any advice Bess.

Other than chipping it off there is no easy way to get it off.
If prepared well it's going to be stuck on well.

Just give it a good soak with warm water, put a tiny bit of washing up liquid in the water to give it some body. Should help soften it a bit. Terrible job you have on your hands there !!!
