I've used it and find it way to course and leaves lots of scratches when sponging it up,we use mortar mix 70 grade a and 30 red and that's hit and miss as wellanyone tried rendering with silver sand. Gonna rub up a house just thought what it might look like. Want to try something different
We Use western and leighton buzzardQuality of sand is all down location also bad luck plays a part. You can catch a bad Batch of any type of sand. Down our way the plastering sand sold by most suppliers is too inconsistent. Silver sand and hydrated lime gives us a cracking finish every time
Sounds good Olican. So it's regular cement, Silver sand and hydrated lime. What mix do you use. If it was your own house would you still go with it.Quality of sand is all down location also bad luck plays a part. You can catch a bad Batch of any type of sand. I've heard that's very good gear, even gets transported all over country to areas with poor quarriesWe Use western and leighton buzzard

Fine silver sand
Might give it a miss then. Think it will be too smooth. Was looking for a course finish. Bet the smooth is hard to rub up.Fine silver sand
Not at all, rubs up a treat and sponges up beautifullyMight give it a miss then. Think it will be too smooth. Was looking for a course finish. Bet the smooth is hard to rub up.
You do know that those lumps of chocolate in it are put there by cats......I like play pit sand as safe to eat aswell
I might get a bag of lime and silver sand. Give it a mix and try it out. Doing my own house with it but never used it. Thought it might look better than ordinary render.Fine silver with lime is a great recipe for decent rendering gear, very important to let the mix turn over in the mixer to bring it to life though
Leighton Buzzard is great sand.We Use western and leighton buzzard
That's what I always thought. Maybe oilican uses different stuff. You would think it would hairline like crazyAny silver sand I've ever seen has been really really fine, the stuff block pavers and schools use in playgrounds ???? Surely it would crack like feck ??? Maybe it's different to the stuff you get in London ? Unless you mean white sand which is coarser
Which waterproofer do you prefer to use?5:1:1 white sand:cement:hydrated lime. Should be good. Not white cement but. Should be a nice colour.
Leighton Buzzard is great sand.
You swallowed a diy book on plasteringI've always used a 'fine sharp' sand - angular sand grains that don't roll against each other which can cause crazing/cracking - builders/soft washed sand etc have round grains. The fine sharp sand also allows the binder (cement or hydraulic lime) to sit between the angular grains.
Hi there what mix ratio do you prefer with sliver sand?View attachment 19608 This is the silver sand I'm using today from travis, fairly soft no little stones or owt like that, can get it at jewson aswell now. @Olican , josh was saying that chap in Dartmouth uses Cornish lime company sand? Not seen it myself but he said it was decent and can be delivered. Hard to beat silver though.
5:1:1 or 4:1:1 is ideal, put hydrated lime through itHi there what mix ratio do you prefer with sliver sand?
