Hi all,

I know this post was a long time ago but it exactly relates to my project.

We need to render a stud wall. it is an internal wall of a swimming pool building.

The stud work is not yet built so i have the option of any separation deemed necessary. However I am limited on thickness available. I cant afford stud - ply - paper - baton - paper - eml - 3 coats which it appears this post would suggest.

Can we get away with less as it is inside a dry basement and the stud wall is really just there for insulation.

my initial plan was Stud - paper - eml - 2 coat render.

what are the pitfalls with this? i might be able to afford a thin ply layer, but no extra battoning i dont think. surely the eml fixed well would do the same bracing job as a ply layer anyway.

help please

thanks

Jon
Sooo. @Narcosi, where you from love?

Hi - thanks for the welcome

i am Jon a property developer and builder.

what is s@c?

roofing felt rather than paper - cool!

the wall is 15m long - did I mention that?

what stud spacing would you use with that method?

Hi Narcosi

Welcome to the Forum Mate!

You say you have a stud wall already and are limited for space.... how does a 12.5mm board fixed direct to the studs, 5mm basecoat and mesh, then sand and cement finish (if that is what you want, although a further 1-2 mm basecoat and then paint may be suitable)

Have a little look at the KnaufAquapanel Exterior web link in my signature below - ignore the wall build up and cavity, that is needed on an external application. Internally, you can directly apply to the studs and crack on!

15m long wall is no problems with KnaufAquapanel Exterior (assessed and approved by BBA), where traditional EMl and S&C render will usually need a movement gap every 6 mtrs to limit cracking.

Feel free to get in touch with me and I will be happy to help further - 07918766577. FYI - I am the technical expert from Knauf who looks after the KnaufAquapanel Exterior range, not a spread....

There are lots of guys on here capable of doing the installation and thin coat render finishing.... let us know where your based (and a means of contacting you if you want guys to quote - E mail is usually best, you can ignore later contacts)

Good Luck

Richard Lord

Welcome along bud :RpS_thumbsup: @runwithscissors might have an alternative to s@c methods

Cheers Oli

You Da Man!!

Shame I have such a tricky forum name... you missed an 's' so the tag missed me..... so had to do a bit of trawling to find this....LOL

Might see if @Danny can set me up with a second forum name link for tagging that send notices to my acct... RWS seems to be an idea

(I bet danny cannot do that...lol)

Cheers bud!

Hi Jon, S@C is a plastering term which means you need to get a plasterer to do your work that is sexual and charismatic.... I am a bit busy right now though.
Joking aside, s@c means sand@cement. Why not post your details and ask someone here to pop along and take a look, lots of very good tradesmen and women on here.
Best of luck

or just use the @knauf one? @Runswithscissors?

Why does " Knauf Aquapanel " get picked up by adverts that go to an Amazon sales page..... at STUPID rates (I might add...)

I have taken the space out between on the earlier post to get rid of it...

Added edit - like the one on the Amaz.. word above... Looks ike someone else if tagging words on here Danny... you getting your cut marra? LOL

Thanks Richard

Thanks for this - i have about 18mm from stud to finish which i know is tight.

when you say mesh - do you mean eml or other?

i guess what it comes down to is I would prefer to just render the eml on paper (or felt) i just need to know what to do to prevent cracking etc.....

Jon

How about "catty" style??
Rendering over EML

Hi Guys, ok having had a long and very usefull chat with richard i have decided there is not enough thickness for the board.

So I will be going with a rigid insulation, then felt, then eml then 2 coats of S@C (look at me!!)

so remaining questions -

how much to over lap the eml sheets to avoid cracks
what spacing for the studs
will it crack or will the eml hold it together do we think?

Overlap 75mm eml sheets spacing the studs is common sense (if your trying 600 centres you will have trouble) just make sure you use plenty of fixings with washers and the mesh is taught and not springy and you should be OK, also put SBR in your first coat at least it helps reduce cracking.

thanks - i think i will go for 300mm centers (its only money) :-)

SBR?

what quantity or just go by the instructions?

I put a good splash in a bucket of water your using for mixing like you would febmix or waterproofer for example? I describe it to the lad as "like your making a milky coffee boy!! A good splash!!" :RpS_laugh:

No one on here knows how to spell Knauf either......

it is written on the bags... no one reads them....PMSL...

There you go guys - Tag me using Knauf as well... I'll get the message....

So how comes you didn't answer my query on my thread about fixing insi boards then Richard?.......... Still not herd out off moaty either.............bloody knarf

Thanks Marshy

all looking good the rigid insulation is working well and goinbg to provide a good backing for the felt/elm and solid to push render against.

final advice (i hope)

which felt?

underlay?
top layer with grit/gravel in it
impregnated with tar
standard without the tar in it
breathable felt for under batons and tiles?

thanks as always

J

Dunno Marra.... I'll try and find out...

I'm gonna kick Moaty's a-hole... you can do whatever you like to it... :RpS_scared:

Hi Guys, in case anyone is interested all is going well. over 22m of wall done in this way so far - scratch coat seems really strong. top coat later this week.

300mm centers on timber - roofing felt then eml.

base coat on mesh, then scratch coat at 3.5:1 with SBR

top coat will be 4:1:1(lime)

Jon

It almost sounds as if we knew what we was talking about!?? Lol :RpS_thumbup:

The top sounds like it's to strong to me.4/1/1.with this kind of work use plenty of fibres as possible in scratch coats, getting Weaker through the system.

Hi Guys,

I have hit a problem, my plasterer/renderer has fallen ill. looks like a few weeks and this job cant wait.

The scratch coat is done and I need about 3 days of 2 guys (I will provide labour) to do the top coat. one wall is 15m long, so straight is the key and i need guys who know what their doing.

I am based in Harrow, any takers or recommendations?

thanks

Jon
