Rendering over lead step flashings

Hello chaps,

I've been on this forum for a while but this is my first proper post and am after some of everyone's expertise. I've just reflashed my roof and need to render the parapet walls. I have a bit of ground level rendering experience so may give this one a go myself.

My question is - where the step flashing meets the abutment walls would you just place one long bellcast bead over the lead (so some parts are over lead and others over brickwork) and then render to the bead (i.e. with some render over lead / some over brickwork) or would you have to render to each individual step? Also would the lead need to be coated with SBR / use of some EML?

Straight up with one bead for me. The lead should be covered by the bead mesh anyway so no need for anything else.
 
I would not render that !


You would be best to just chase a lead cap flashing to cover the brick, with no overhang, & point the brick above under coping
& Chimney take lead up to overhang!
 
Brad straight up with eml extra few inches overlapping top of bead and an inch or so clearing the lead

Yeah as long as the lead is covered in eml or the bell covers it you'll be fine.
Not much there to render tho!
 
Don't render the lead!!!

It will expand and contract due to hot and cold and will have a crack where the render goes from the rendered sub-straight to the lead!

Also, if you get condensation on the lead in the colder weather, this water will wick up behind the render and cause staining and potentially cracking and failure....

Lead reacts with alkaline materials, renders contain limestone Sands.....
 
Treated with patination oil you mean?
Don't think it would make a difference tbh..as you say..cant think of the last time I seen anyone use it on new lead either :(
 
Nope it also treats lead and is great stuff if you happen to stain the lead with a bit of muck ! Always carry a bottle in the van for this.
