Plastering sand! In our area it's called "gibbons sand" or just plastering sand,it's essentially a fine washed sand.
I don't use a quarry direct just merchants and in our area they have four types of sand in each depot..if i ordered fine washed sand from a local pit i would receive soft sand.
plastering sand that we use i would describe it as 50% sharp 50% soft sand.

I have always assumed that plastering sand is a fine washed sharp sand due to the coarse particle shape.
I think different areas have many different names for them
That's expensive,I can see what you mean big difference,is about £35 at the merchants here,the merchants I use are private businesses not chains like travis Perkins,jewson etc though we do have these big chain types but as you said they are too dear.i can not afford to purchase sand at builders merchant prices £52 per three quarters of a ton, pit price £26 per ton.
