Ok lads what age do u think a plasterer should hang is trowel up? Or slow down couple of days a week

i hung up my trowel and started teaching years ago - apart from being bald blind and deaf ------- i don't look a day over 50:inocente::lol:

Am going be 33 in February. Tbh i don't think I want to be in this game anymore. Iv just turned down 3 jobs just because i didn't want to do them. Am thinking of buying a new business. Or starting a new one. I have fell out of love with plastering. I decided not to go to work this week just because I wasn't arsed.

what about going into teaching plastering, training the next generation of plasterers

the thought of plastering at 50 60 70 is bonkers and somewhat scary!!!
I should think it ok if u take it easy pase your self and put it your head I'm not a spring chicken any more and b senseble about what jobs u take on

i'm 33 and i really can't be arsed with plastering these days if i take on plastering i subby it straight back out, i don't make much on it but my hearts not in it to do it myself, i don't mind rendering but the hand balling is hard work hence why i bought a machine.

He had obviously slowed down an awful lot, but said it kept him fit, the last few years he'd go in at half 9 or 10 and be home by 4.
Loved having the craic with the lads, everyone had their breaks wherever he was working, that's what he misses more than anything I think.

y not m8 it hard graft and u come to a certain point in life that u think I should slow down just take it easy enjoy the work enjoy life to .Thers more to life than work and money.Thers a saying in welsh don't know if u say it what the point of winning the world and in the end to loose your health an soul .In other words f**k your self with killing your self

I was told to make your money young and then get out and do something that is a little bit easier on the bones...

I wish I started younger and saved more money and bought more property assets etc :-\

Just come back after 3/4 yrs out of it. I'm 32. Grass ain't always greener.
Different attitude now. Work 4 days a week maximum. Only take on work I can comfortably do. Work less than that in school holidays. Enjoy my time away from work much more these days. Don't kill myself during the days I do work either. 2 gauges a day max. Seen my old mans health problems and I'd like to avoid them if possible.
Now I take it easier, I really love it again.

I work hard and play hard.. I use to work in the winter and take as much of the summer off.... That has changed a bit due to building the buggy and the renovation so I am actually working now :-\ but still life is too short to be spent working :D

It would make more sense to work in the summer and take the winter off.

Exactly.
I earn enough to pay my bills etc. And have enough left over to enjoy myself.
I think as long as I'm reliable turn up when I say I will and explain my situation to anyone I work for. Then people have the choice to employ me on honest terms.
Work to live I say. Should never be the other way round, but can be REALLY hard to find that balance. Everyone has different commitments etc.

sounds like you have had a health implication or something to change your mindset...

Dont get me wrong when I am not working I never stop... I set challenges each year and i have a saying that I am quite well known for now and that is I dont fail... I do what ever it takes... and if you see me on Faceache... i do whatever it takes to complete that goal... but I do also take a back seat and rest when I can as well

No nothing like that!
I'm in good health. Just wanted to enjoy life, kids, my lady etc.
Had some bad luck of my own making, so adjusting my life as a result of that.
I'm not unmotivated, just changed what motivates me!!

Clemo,
If you don't mind my advice.
I fecking hated plastering too , despised it to be brutally honest.
So I went and did something else for around 8 years.

I dunno what happened but i started taking a few more jobs over the past year and kinda putting it out there that im doing a bit more.

I work part time at a few things that i really enjoy so I have enough money for the day to day things.

So in regards plastering , domestic and small builders. I really enjoy it now , I respect how much i have learnt over the years and i find the clients now have more interest in different methods and materials etc so are great to work with.
I work to my own schedule and pace to suit each job with the aim being quality and no stress esp in domestic.
Turn down anything that instinct tells me is hassle , if someone phones and says "reckon there is 2 days in it" i dont even bother going to look at it , i decide how long each job takes when i look at it , not the client, im the expert!

Suppose positive thinking , not all jobs work out the way you think etc , but when its not going great i think of how lucky i am to be good at a skilled trade and get good money for it , how im healthy and well and try to put some of the money into holidays etc so im having things to look forward to.

I worked in a very different environment and its no fun either for various reasons!

Main thing that worked for me was to get off the hamster wheel , downsized my home , scrapped every DD and only took the ones i really needed, all that sort of thing to figure out what i really needed and not what i thought i wanted etc.
Weekend millionaires we are and it gives a false sense of money :)

I know from your posts your a good plasterer and there aren't too many of them left in Ireland, pick your work and maybe take a part time handy job to get a bit of steady cash but once the work starts rolling in you wont need it!

One thing for sure , its not a dress rehearsal , only one shot at life and no point wasting it doing something you dont like!

Few posts since i started that :)
I also take chunks of the year out , love the skiing a month at least taken out for that , although ive been missing the beach so taking 2 months out this year , one month skiing and the other in Thailand.
Been working flat out since i got back from Italy in March and already got the month in Thailand sorted.
Got a call there this morning from a mate who has given me a couple of days a week for the next 4 months so thatll sort the skiing out.

Took a long time to get to that , years of work and bills and mortgages and childcare and stress.
Made small changes bit by bit , never been happier :)

On age of retirement , i know a guy was plastering into his 80's !

Suppose its down to how you think of it

retire and work PT in B and Q , work 25 hours at min wage taking crap off all sorts of managers and customers , clocking in and out etc for the princely sum of £150

or skim a wall or two at your own pace with no hassle £200

ill work till im 80 too if my body allows me
