Hi anyone reading this. Doing some rendering on a timber frame extension which is to be ply wood then rib lath externally. Just looking for tips on mix ratio and generally tips on rendering onto rib lath cos never done it. Thanks

Hi Phoebe

Has the TF been rib lathed already? If yes, await further info from others.......

If not, why Rib Lath a TF - batten and board it (using Knauf Aquapanel Exterior), then basecoat, mesh and render. Much safer on a TF!

Refer to a post in the Render Discussions section started 31.05.12 titled 'K Rend onto Timber Frame' to see the debate...

E Mail me [email protected] if you want more Knauf Aquapanel Exterior info - my details are on my profile as well.....

Good luck!

Like scissor sisters says..........board it rather than lath.......:RpS_thumbup:

When your trying to convince someone about boards vs riblath, get them to picture using the riblath on an internal partition wall vs plasterboard. Nobody does it that way anymore. There's just a better, quicker and more reliable way of doing it. Same with outside, boards and thin coat render on tf. Save the riblath for awkward curved bays etc. You can still have flat, dashed or roughcast finishes for a traditional thick coat render appearance on boards.

Good post goody. Being on domestics for past twenty-ish years I am way out of touch with all the modern systems. One of the reasons I joined up :RpS_thumbup:

Well said Goody! I like that explaination....

By the way, you can even bend Knauf Aquapanel Exterior to create the curves...... very easy to do, no damage to the performance of the board - down to a 1 mtr radius. Contact me for explaination of how to do it....... Although, if you have use it, you will know how easy it is.... lol

The customer wants to use expamet mesh straight on ply wood rather than the rib lath. Is this ok or not. If not what should we use ? Thanks

eml is to risky but cheaper. the render cannot get behind the lath when fixed to a solid base to form a good key, rib lath for a quality job. but you need to shop around to a good price.

NO! don't put EML straight onto ply, nothing to do with getting a good bond but it will almost certainly crack. You need to use battens on the ply before applying the EML. Although I'd still three coat rib lath some do chose to just two coat it whereas you'd definitely need to three coat EML. Whether on EML or rib lath I'd use a 3:1 first coat without waterproofer followed by a 4:1 second coat with waterproofer and topped with a 5/6:1:1 top coat.

The odd times ive used it ive put a breathable roofing membrane on top of the latts before the lath
