Used mine yesterday first time nela loved it just a question do you guys that have em let the edges down on oil stone or just continue using it thanks

I used it from brand new mate, no alterations needed... on the premium I rubbed the blade edges down to get rid of the cross grinding, apparently this is needed to give the trowel the worn in bit etc.. but its easily sorted in 10 mins with some wet n dry... great trowels hey..

nela premiums nice mate, I went from the refina to it... i could trowel up ( after the mod ) straight from box...

check them out mate, I love refina,, but nela is way better made.. seriously.. only issue I didnt like with the refina trowels was there was no rivets ... I might be old fashioned, but didnt like that about them... great trowel however... try and get a look at the nela to compare..

Tried both prefer the refina, sold the nela to a spread who loved it, so its fifty fifty

Using a Refina s/f atm .... quality trowel ... also just picked up a Refina leather handled s/s trowel .... both were actually cheaper than Nela

I like using the refina s*p*r*lex, but enjoy looking at the Nela!
The Nela are very well made arguably better than the Refina? But for me they are too narrow and you don't get the same "flex" as the Refina in my view. Ryan @Plasterers1StopShop told me they are planning to bring a wider trowel out at 4and 3quarter inch and apart from the cork handle I'd be happy to try it? I'm still a Refina fan so it would have to be special to make me want to change?

not keen on the nela handle its a tad small for me, i like the 12 inch refina much easier on me wrists n elbows

handles are a funny thing, my mate I work with has his sanded down like a pencil, mine are a lot fatter...personal preference I suppose :RpS_thumbsup:

Well am big nela van only use it after eze spat so being narrow doesnt bother me but see what your saying the wider the flex will be more.nela is a amazing trowel plus side is doesnt need much cleaning compared to refina handle better in saying all that I do like the refina!

Hi Guys,

The NELA s*p*r*lex is only 4.3" in width as we are not promoting this for anything other than a flattening or finishing Trowel.. We don't think laying on with the s*p*r*lex is the best way to go. Therefore the width shouldn't matter to be honest, saying that, after talking to Marshy some wish to lay the second coat on with the s*p*r*lex this is why we are looking into having a version that is 4.75" in width as well.

Please also remember that there are two handles available, the cork has been the most popular. If anyone is unsure on which handle they want they can call me up and I will give them the other handle FOC.

As for the cost, Refina Trowels are cheaper. We had the option to deal with the manufacturer of there trowels or NELA, we have seen the build quality of both Trowels and know that NELA are manufactured to a higher standard. I know this as a fact because the manufacturer has approached NELA to make trowels for them :-)

We know that Trowels are a personal thing when it comes to what each spread wants and we know we can't make everyone happy, but one thing we will do is work our hardest to try and achieve this! Those who met Frank from NELA at the show would agree that he knows what he is talking about and is trying his best to listen to the trade to see what improvements can be made, if any.

We have now sold over 1000 trowels from NELA and have had a handful of people who prefer others.

Refina is excellent, i got it through here thanks then nela came out & prob wont be long b4 another great one comes out, so where do you stop buying ? ive got to many trowels as it is mun !

I can't use super flex trowel for sh*t .... They still leave a right sh*ty finish for me .. Got Nela and refina.

Also one other thing about NELA.

They believe in the quality of the Trowel so much that they offer a 5 year warranty on the workmanship and materials of the Trowel.

We have also put a lot of investment into the NELA products as we really believe in them. We are not just here to make money and run a company but improve the products and try and do positive things for the trade. And that isn't a sales pitch even though it may sound like one, I hope those who have met me will be able to back that statement up ;-)

To be fair until the trade show I'd never met Ryan but we spoke on the phone few times and all the stuff I ordered for myself all spot on and its not often you get a guy who sells anything to ask for your feedback and opinions in order to improve products for the rest of us!? Top lad he is :RpS_thumbup:

I think it's starting to make sense, I've said same thing in @Olican's thread, so by the looks of using the super flex requires you going over your work 4 times. This is why I can't use it, I'm used to going over my work after laying in twice!!! With marshal town. The finish is spot on after 2 trowels. Why would I change trowels to go over it 4times??? Not getting this. Lol

Its a very different method to what you'll be used to. The FB says that using the s*p*r*lex is easier as you don't need to apply much pressure, the Flex in the trowel does the work for you.

Although your going over it more you save time by not adding any water so it balances itself up and proves to be a time saver as well.

I have always gone over 4 times on average with any trowel, but if yours is spot on then thats good aswell, everyones different.. I think everyone knows I got a semi on with refina and they are excellent trowels, its just the nela quality I like, but they are both great trowels.. i had never used a s*p*r*lex and slagged them off plenty.. but took to the nela straight away, got a great finish , no better than using a normal trowel, but with way less effort... apart from the premium and s/f all my other gear is refina, but i will definately try other nela products when they become available..ie. angle trowel, handboard, gauger etc...

ive got to say jon ive never managed to finish a set after only 2 trowels 3 maybe at a push. All I can say is if you've got it down to 2 trowels im assuming that your margin for error on success or failure is pretty slim apose to being able to stay on the gear at your own leisure once on without having to exert to much effort.

however thers that many if and butts in this game and everyones system is right/wrong for the next man so who knows???

I thought the refina plaza was mega few months ago but I decided to ditch as felt I was touching my walls more time than I needed to also had similar considerations at times with spedskims etc. I love them all at times but equaly question if needed at others???? I dunno????

Your right it's very different . . . I can trowel up without water anyway :RpS_biggrin:
