sand and cement render

Not done sand and cement for a few years now, probably because of the area I moved to :(

What ratio are people using.

I'm sure when we was rendering it was 3-1 and a waterproof-er added we also used a mix of sharp and soft/building sand. Build it up using this and then for the final coat use 4-1 and waterproof-er again using a mix of sharp and soft/building sand.
This is external work again I do not think we ever changed anything doing internal or external rendering.
Advice would be appreciated looking at quoting on a few rendering jobs.

Thanks

I'm not or ever use the ratios you suggest. I think 3:1 is too strong for most substrates? All depends on your brick/block your rendering on. I'd recommend you use a decent quality rendering sand rather than piss about mixing sharp sand and building sand. Building sand is full of impurities and s**t for rendering

The mix is too strong. Base 4-1 at the most if not a bit weaker. 5 or 6:1 top coat.

As to sand, I use only sharp but Wickes sharp is too sharp. That I would mix a bit of soft with.

That is all we ever used was soft sand and sharp (North Yorkshire -Malton) Never used plastering sand. Would you keep using the 4-1 each coat until you get the wall plum etc then use the 5-1 ?

If I have to use wp I'll only put it in the topcoat. Everyone is different I suppose. But am right. :birra:
Lol yeh but you also said you don't use it if it's cold and it also weakens the mix so your wrong three times xx oh and I'm right but to be fair if you live on the coast I would recommend it in the top coat. Xx

Just don't use wp lol :aburrido:

I'm guessing Clemo doesn't like wp in the scratch in winter is because he will be napping it and doesn't want to be there napping in the dark.
Personally I use it in all s&c work I do, scratch, top & floating.
