I purchased a double roll of Wickes scrim today out of sheer desperaration as needed to get job done.Ive used it in the past but fogot just how bad the stuff really is !!!
This stuff is absolutely fcking useless make no mistake !!!

Each side of the roll kept coming away,it wouldnt stick, there were large areas with damaged square pattern missing.
In the end i had to put it on with finnish like the old days.

Thank god for silver scrim.

Do you know I honestly dont know if scrim works at all sometimes?? I have had ceilings where its still cracked along the joints even though its been scrimmed!! Sometime I'm thinking whether to scrim or not & make sure the plaster squeezes into the joints but I daren't in case it ends up being 10 times worse!!! Devil & the deep blue sea!
Has anyone skimmed a ceiling without scrimming & if so what did it end up like?

scrimming doesnt guarantee cracks, even on the wrapper it says it helps prevents cracking, if the joists/wall/stud have got movement then the scrims not gonna do much good

I cant help thinking that when we had to skim your scrim on as it was hessian, it didn't crack as much!!?? Maybe looking through rose tinted glasses like or perhaps never payed much attention!! :RpS_unsure:

years ago i used to do bits of plasteing for this builder, anyhow after a few years working for him he decided he could save money by getting his lads to do the plaster boarding.
anyhow one day get s a call saying 30m2 kitchen diner ceiling all boarded ,materials here ready to skim how much?
I tells him if its ready to skim £ xxxx 's.
Anyhow turns up to do it and there no scrim on any of the joints and you could see rows of joists what had been missed with nails gaps of 5-10 on most boards, joints not staggered, some boards put on upside down etc etc basically a fcking mess.
Any how i just skimmed it to teach the tight prick.
1 week later gets a call saying ceiling u did is full off cacks, tells him what the ceiling you prepared ready for me to skim.Tells him its your problem you boarded it i just skimmed it.I f your boys didnt prep it right its not my problem. The price was just to skim it no put right ur errors then skim it which would of took 3-4 hrs.
The guy never ever tried ought like that on me again although i felll out with him over a differnt matter years later

A boards should be checked for fixings and movement before skimming is applied, if this is not done ,boards will move when pressure is applied when trowelling up,just like you wouldnt skim over old lime putty that was coming away from the brickwork. As a tradesperson, you are only covering yourself ,because its the last man at it that gets the blame if it all goes tits up,plus you cant get a proper finish on any back ground that is moving
