i have boarded a ceiling , i need to know how long to wait before second coating and secondly when flattening in , do i need to get rid of all small lines or will these come out when wet troweling ??? ???

after i have laid on my first coat,i get all me gear clean and mix up second coat..give a quick brush round the edges to remove any build up.
then just before i lay it on i just flatten the first coat removing any lines,,then away you go. ;)

daz, can i ask you a serious question. are you actually charging customers to do these jobs? i really, really hope not.

who said anythink about MESSING about :-\ if you can get your first coat on flat. 2 sec's over it to bed it and then second coat, all adds to better finish ..after all thats what its all about ;)

Ive got a mate who skimmed a ceiling once. He was telling me all about it saying how well it went. He then asked when should he go back to do the second coat! What a dick! He was gutted when i told him what he had done.

Thats ace ;D

Big dick. Lol. Know some jack off alls who got someone cheaper in to replace me. He laid on first coat and went home without troweling off. Come back next day finish off. that'll teach you tight arses.

Right, what you've got to get a feel for is timing and this will only come with time and lots of practise.

it's almost instinctive, but if I had to break it down, then I'd say it's a combination of getting a feel for the suction of the background, the relative humidity of the room, how thick you're laying it on and what the gears like you're laying on - people have said enough times on here that finish responds differently according to what time of the year it was manufactured or by batch.

Once I've put me first coat on, which varies in thickness depending on the background suction or if it's a reskim (uneven surfaces and reskimming artex for instance requires you to lay it on pretty thick) then I'll get on with cleaning up. I instinctively know when to throw on the second coat, but in the past i've felt it with my finger to see how it's firming up. I suggest you try this.

I don't trowel out lines on the first coat, I just go on with the second coat. That's due to the fact that I lay stuff on quickly but smoothly. When people start out they tend to leave lots of lines and ridges. So if you're starting out it's probably a good idea to trowel your first coat flat - don't waste time getting it perfect. Then with time and practise, you'll sort out your trowel technique and there won't be so many lines.

All I can say is practise, practise, practise...

Surely you want the first coat as flat as possible making the second coat easier to flaten out.
your wall or ceiling is already flat thats why you dont need to flatten first coat,a good plasterer knows how to get a flat finish

i did!what do you think second coat is for.ring bg they will tell you the same.

Can someone post a video of them doing a first coat that doesnt have lines please.

You will be famous in the plastering world as the only person who has ever achieved this.

you're right.

You can get it relatively smooth though with practise. It'll still have lines but they won't be deep holes and ridges. If you time the second coat right you'll smooth over these with the next coat. Sometimes I do flatten out first coats if the lines look really deep. but yeah nobody can throw coats on with no lines.

Maybe they need an eye test. I know plasterers who've been doing it thirty years plus, who still get lines during first coat. I supose you could do it, but the ammount of time you spend fanying around, you could of troweled it off and started to lay on the second

I always usta get the first coat as flat as possible when laying on. This is how i had been taught.

Now i fire on the first coat, don't worry about it being neat( to a certain extent),then go back and quickly flatten it before second coat.

Trust me, much easier, quicker and better finish. Anyone who tells you not to flatten your first coat is talkin sh#te.

What a t**t >:( just because you can't put it on both quickly and neatly don't think none of us can, I don't flatten my first coat and neither do most of the good spreads I've come across.

Being a good plasterer is not what people should be aspiring to. Excelence is where people should to be. Besides, the original post was from a novice. Anyone starting out should always trowel off between coats, as they generaly won't be fast enough to get away with not troweling off second coat.

I'm one of the old f*ckers who, after a few years decided I couldnt be arsed flattening the first coat (you think your saving time) then something ree introduced it to me and its miles easier and faster.

I throw my first on as fast as possible too. With plastering it aint how you start its how you finish.
