It's ideal factoring in extra costs for that stuff but it's difficult to be competitive when quoting against all the desperate one man bands, I was talking to my mate the other day and he is more than happy to work for £120 a day, that's a joke. I told him that they aren't the rates anymore but he seemed fine with it. Madness

So for £120 my mate is willing to quote a job, collect materials, actually do the job, pay his insurances and any other overheads and pay his tax and national insurance contributions and earn hardly anything for himself. Might aswell get an employed job for Less money with holiday and sick pay , pension etc?

This is what a lot of noobs take a long time to realise. They do realise in the end though when they're shattered and penniless and wonder what's going on :loco:

Touchy... it was a straight question.

Thing is, any job is only worth what you can get for it and it's not just the Polish men who'll work for cheap. Firms up North are offering around £12-13/hr £90-100/day.

If you've got two days work, the boss will probably send you one plasterer on £90/100 and one semi skilled on something like £80, pocketing the £60/70 for organising the job.

I agree that £120 a day isn't enough when you factor in expenses and sitting at home some days but your mate is probably doing it right if his plan is to build up his business to the point where he can get someone else to work for cheap eventually.

Wasn't touchy mate just my own mates are the ones keeping the rates down I tried to explain but he is quite content so good luck to him I guess?

NP.

The reason I was asking is that the prices do seem to vary wildly. I can get £11-12 p/h on the trucks with no days at home, no van to maintain, no tools and no scope for it going wrong.

Double bubble at weekends and almost as many hours as I want to commit to.

Trouble is that is makes you unfit, fat and a bit of a mentalist from being on your own all day and night and maybe kipping in the services 5-6 nights a week if you're going for the real big bucks.

I'm happier with a trowel in my hand but if it's really THAT hard to make a living, then I think I'd probably like to balance the two out and try to get the best of both worlds.
