The thread was about a skills test which is what I commented on and it's the same old bullshit that has been going on on plastering forums for the last ten years. The guys who learnt off another spread saying quals and an apprenticeship are a joke of course they will say that because they think they know better where as them that have done a full apprenticeship will swear by it.

@zombie, you've that arseways man, all work is essentially price work, if the only thing a bloke has ever done is dab and skim he is not a site plasterer he is a dab n skimmer, mostly come in two varieties , dog rough and dog roughs older rougher alcoholic sister.

I don't realy get your comment mate...you can only walk on site and complete the works being asked...
as said 90% is skimming on boardwork that's for sure...10% the odd runs where specified float & set on blockwork...
I think everyones missing my point im not for 1 minute saying that an apprentaship isn't worth doing...
ironicaly ive put 2 different lads through there apprentaship at college as im a firm believer that any paperwork for a young lad is a benefit..
im simply saying that like all things the work is where the demand is...
cut I pay my mortgage without putting a fibrous mould up or screeding a floor or even floating sand & cement hell yeah every day of the week...
however if I turned all the work down that requires board work, floating hardwall, skim & over skim/refurb work ewi etc and be hungry very soon!!!
I think I would have gone to domestic plasterering if I saw all those s**t skimmers getting paid the same as me if not more

For the record Round my way the domestic plasterers are rougher than site plasterers
I remember one fella on site who was battering flats skimming them maybe two flats a week on his own or more. He would do let's say £1500 worth and only get paid £800 every week and he had an easy filler going in all his flats but he was happy and so were the firm. I worked for the main ones in Manchester and if you stood the hundred lads they had in a line they all laboured for one another at some point then went on their own with the encouragement of the gaffers. All dog rough and not having a clue and the skill getting less mad less as another labourer went on his own. Houses were going up that quick and selling that quick nobody gave a f**k even the idiots buying them because the prices were also rising that quick. The prices are shocking and I believe are worse than they were 8 years ago when i was doing it. Unless it's a new extension on a domestic you can't really dab everything you see, if you do you will be getting a call back on domestics and fair enough their are chancers on the domestic scheme but they don't last long and only rely on cheap customers who will always exist.

I agree and it all comes down to qualification providers ie NVQ which is a load of bollox and not really worth the paper it's written on.

I got a nvq diploma 1st hon etc for boiling an eggYou would laugh your bollox off with things you can get an NVQ for these days
The funding is there someone's getting it and like you say you don't need to be a plasterer to teach basic plastering which a lot of them teach and no fault of their own so I believe. I know my local college a bricklayer teaches the plastering and also bricklaying I think so there you go stretching the money or one bloke doing two jobs.

And whilst on the subject how am I carrot dangling can I help it that the job isn't water tight etc and builder is behind have u ever done site work you numpty jobs get put bk by months we will c who's a carrot dangler wen the Job does kick off its worth well over £100,000+ so these things cant be rushed etc I've told the builder not bringing lads in till job is totally ready so lads dont miss on on earning there full potential..prick

Your all rough! Nobody skims a master bedroom in 1 hit with 12 wet angles as good as me so calm down. My floating is s**t these days as well but a few days back on floating domestic 8m2 walls and i'd destroy you all at that as well!

This is not about who can do the most and earn the most it's about qualifications and a skills test. How many people on here encourage their children to not get any qualifications because they are a waste of time? I doubt any ok maybe one 
this same thing gets brought up time and again and it's the same unqualified people having the same argument. We all know that some colleges are s**t and some plasterers are s**t who teach so for the trade to keep any kind of standards we need to encourage qualifications.
