Skimming a porthole.

Whats the best way to prep and skim a pothole? plastic arch skim bead? brush in skim or use trowell or both?

Use a strip of hard board, curved around the inside, but set it 5 mill out on the face. Also pack the hardboard out around the whole strip, so when you skim the face of the wall the skim is pushed into the gap where you have packed it out, this gives you a edge to work to when you come to do the inside of the porthole. You can do the inside free hand, or make a window gauge, and set it up with the edge you have made and the edge of the frame. Thats of course if you know how to set up a window gauge. :)
 
na your better off cutting a hole 3mm smaller then the porthole in some hardboard stick it up on the ceilingunder the porthole and skim porthole first and that will give you an arris to work to on the ceiling much better no packing then..
 
are they plastic? only seen plastic ones in screwfix for £11 pack of 5 only need 1.

you will never get a perfect circle with a bead m8 its to tight i think

3 mill monkey, bit tight on space ! :), but you are correct, this is another way of doing it, but more work invloved, but gives a better job. Doing it this way i would go for about 5 to 7 mill smaller than the porthole :)

no its less work m8 just cut a hole out plant it in the bottom of hole and skim done no fancy packers and all that ,me and kebab are old school lads

Im in farnborough hants, about 2 hrs from taunton, y ou can have them if ya want them, reckon your just as cheap to gan into Screwfix, or toostation.

I did this one with a bit of the flexi mdf from b&q and still got over half a sheet left for any more jobs of this type, generally use the steel thin coat stops but the curve is way too tight for em

Skimming a porthole.
 
Ive only ever done 2 of these and both times over skims,all i did was to skim to it and polish it in with no beads and wash edges with water looked good when finnished and painted
 
Whatever gets the job done we could to an fro all night with different ways that's why i don't get too involved in the basic posts any more , all this is day to day stuff been doin it for years and evolving as i go , done loads of arches n curves using all sorts of beads , bent boards, hard angle , running moulds, etc etc but every job is different and i adapt to the quickest and most cost effective method that the job dictates, an this is the system i adopted for this job , it's not rocket science and is not difficult , so what i would say to you newbies is "practice makes perfect" take on board the different advice given and adopt the one you think you could use , sorry if i sound condescending , don't mean too ;) ;) and for all you pisssssss takin twwwwwaaatssss cough cnuts :P
