So much work about

I have spent this morning reading and generally catching up on the life of the forum over the couple of weeks I have been away and I am seeing a tonne of threads on work being offered to plasterers...

Is this due to the upturn?

Are rates increasing as well?

Or is it because it's the school holidays and a lot of plasterers are spending the summers with their children and families?

I've noticed a small increase in rates maybe for skimming . Rates where down to as little as £1.80 a couple years back . £2.20 ish last year n around £2.70-£3 m2 now. What I charge for mono has gone up and what I'm offered has gone up also.

What did you do at uni?

Marketing Management ... tbh the thought of sitting in an office clock watching isn't appealing either so i'll probably be making no change ... just having a moan haha ... did it after I graduated and hated it so much just sat about. love plastering just hate having more than a few days off quiet

Been a long time since i seen it as busy.
My rates are always much the same on domestic but for the builders i work for ive put £20-£40 a day on and not been any questions asked, in fact one builder gave me extra money and said look after him as he has a load of kitchens/bathrooms coming up and wants me for them.
Dunno about site work but looks a fair amount of new build going on around the place.

Turning the smaller jobs away daily due to having 3/4 big jobs on the go.
Haven't really upped rates.still charging the same as last year

I went on my own just as it went bad and since last year I've had enough work to have 3-5 subbies and this year has been manic.
I could do with more hands but don't want to go to big to quick.
I'm happy with who I've got. No doubt it will slow down again come winter/Xmas but hopefully next year will be the same.
I've put my rates up. I have one contractor who I still do day rate for but I'll keep him sweet as he will have something for winter.
If people mention about costs now I just politely tell them cheap and decent don't go together.

I've also never been booked up so far in advance.
Since April I've been a good 4-5 months in front.
Booked solid till November at the moment.
I love work so this for me is living the dream! [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Been the busiest year we have had. We have enough to do us right into the middle of November. I only do domestic and work for a small builder. I've had people willing to wait 6 - 8 weeks just to get a ceiling plastered.

I'm off this week, it happens rarely, miles coming up, I hate new business ,I really do, I am a sole fish at the min,my plasterer off with a bad back ,30 yrs with a 2/1 gang, find it impossible solo.firms will pay me well for a gang or well enough for me, next week I'll be swamped with offers, going back to my Notting hill job,and as always once you start work ,you will get offers,
I don't see the money been any better , £1000 a week was what I got 10 yrs back

I didn't change my rates in the downturn and I was about average. I haven't upped them yet but I will in December as my costs are going up gradually.

As for workload, I can only do the same amount now as I've always done. So the amount of work won't change for me.

Very busy yes and noticed this year getting a lot of calls regarding plasterers letting people down!
Various excuses from girlfriend/wife gave birth, bad back, shoulder, van broke down. Plasterer can't come back to finish or not turning up and cant get hold of them etc.
I wouldn't say I'm the best in our area but I've always been reliable clean and curtious.:sisi:

Being let down by plasterers is only hearing one side of the story. I done a house last month except for the two bathrooms as the client didn't know what they were going to do with them, (wetwall, tile or skim) 2 weeks later I get a phone call, "we've decided to plaster and part tile the bathrooms could you come tomorrow and do them?" errr..no, i'm up to my eyes in it you'll need to wait a couple of weeks or alternatively get someone else.

There was no hard feelings but them speaking to people will probably be saying I let them down but hey ho.

I am constantly hearing plasterers letting people down and it seems to be the stereotypical thing... read a lot about it on twitter

trouble with our trade is we are always waiting for the trade before or working round the next trade... does piss you off somewhat

Its unbelievable how many blokes have let us down in the last two months. People asking for work & just not showing up then cowardly don't even call or even text to say they're not going to show.

Rates aside if i've told someone i'll be there i've not once just not shown up. It's beyond me how people can go back on there word so easily.

People often ask to pencil them in for a job but i wont do this until i have an email confirming acceptance of my estimate. To be fair i dont know how sparkies and plumbers cope with the comings and goings.

There is no honour or loyalty like there used to be.
People think it's ok to do this and don't realise the impact it has.
Keeping to your word means nothing to most now.

Thinking of changing my number to get some bloody peace......phone wont stop ......contractors nearly begging !!!
PUT UP YOUR BLOODY RATES !!
