Soft sand and cement textured finish

Ok - I am a tradesman, well ok a painter and decorator but I claim to know a fair bit about the plastering trade after 20+ years. Question? I have just had the outside of my house textured with a 4 to 1 mix which I have left to dry out for 12 days now. I started to paint the house but as soon as I roll it on, it is softening the textured finish. When I pass the roller over the same spot within a few seconds the paint is pulling off the top of the render making it very difficult to paint. I can stop this happening by using a stabilising solution to bind the surface before painting and this does work, I have tested. Now my question to all you knowledgable folk out there is 1) should I have to stabilise a new texteured finish?
2)why might this be happening, the softening when painting?
3) If the answer to question 1 is no, is this something the plasterer would be expected to contribute towards financially to correct
4) Because the finish is soft before stabilizing, is it possible that it will susceptable to breaking down in a frost if painted without stabilising and could it still be susceptable even when solution applied.

One thing to note: I can also just wet the new finish with water and softly with my nail make the finish crumble to sand should I be able to do this after the 12 days it has set. Many thanks for your attention and I await responses eagerley.:RpS_wink:

Doesn't sound good, wonder if it has had to much add or been baked? Shouldn't be coming back after this long, whats behind it?

Hi yes we used plastering sand or rendering sand that I have had left over when the house was rendered originally. It was recommended by a good plasterer to be a good grade rendering sand. The texture was put on over bare smooth render, smotthed with a sponge.

Hi there

Bag covered up and bricked on top ... would have to be a clever dog or cat to get in and no sign of the kids .. :RpS_thumbup:

do you mean you have gone over the old render? this could cause it to dry to quick and dust up.

or was it sunny and it has baked it,causing it to dry to quick and dust up.

mmmmmmmm,or he could of gauged it with shovels, cocked the mix up completely and the mix is too weak, which will cause it to dust up:RpS_lol::RpS_lol::RpS_lol::RpS_lol::RpS_lol::RpS_lol:

Hi there Craigw

The original render was done about 10 years ago and obviously was completly dry. I wasnt around when they were applying the finish but my guess is that they applied it to a dry wall. Should they have dampened this wall downe before applied the textured finish? and would this have prevented this problem? it was a hot sunny day when they applied the textured finish. could they have dampened the finish after it was applied to stop it drying out too quick? :RpS_cursing: If this is the cause of the problem, should i ask the plasterer to contribute towards the stabilising solution to bind the textured finish so that i can paint easily or should it be removed and redone?

Many thanks

hi logger,
im a tad lost as to what finish they have applied, could you post any pics.
having read it again,is it just a really thin coat of render, and what kind of texture is it?
cheers

Hi There

It was a sand and cement mix applied with a teraline gun over the top of smooth render (approx 8 years old) which was in good ocndition but a bit up and down so decided to get it textured to hide the uneveness of the original render. No PVA put on walls but I think they did say that they put some sbr in mix to help stick.

hi logger, the only things i can think of is its just baked in the sun,and dried out instead of having time to set.
why not spray paint it after a stabeliser instead of rolling the paint?

so they just liturally sprayed the tyrolene over the top of 8 year old render if this is the case i usually would have done a spritz coat first to give a key then proberly (for what sounds like a small area) given it a butter coat then sprayed on that.
if they have just flicked ontop of the old render and it was hot its proberly just turned to dust with nothing to key onto.
just my thoughts

is it just the new finish that is pulling off or the is it pulling the old off too or is it just the actual paint that is peeling back off itself?

Oh so it was bodged in the first place

bodged in the 1st place:RpS_thumbup:
,i personally would not go over any old render with owt. i know you guys like this new stuff, and ive even used the webber dashing gear, but knocked the old stuff off 1st.(just down to scratch,if its solid)

just the way ive been taught though:rolleyes)
