Hi there,
I need to get a solid brick victorian townhouse rendered. It's double thick solid brick with a basement designed to regulate damp. About 40 years ago it was rendered with Cement and as such has had various damp problems because the render has been trapping the moisture inside the house.
We had a specialist old building survey done on the house and they confirmed the damp problems are due to inappropriate render. (they also gave some other tips for preserving the internals of the house) but the main issue seems to be the type of render and the fact that it's blown in places and letting moisture in. when the survey was done we where the guy recommended Lime Render.
I've priced up lime render and i can't get an affordable quote for my house (It's very large over 100m2 of wall), i'd love to get what the guy recommended but its simply more than i can afford. I know the walls will need repair work when the old render comes off so the whole thing is going to be a very big/expensive job.
I've spoken to various other companies about other sorts of render and they all invariably promise their modern render is vapour permeable and it will be suitable.
I'm reluctant and honestly terrified... this poor house has been though 40 years of the wrong render and i'm spending my life savings to fix the problem. I won't be able to afford to re-do it if i get it wrong.
I've tried googling but i cant find anything that compares them with ratings or scores .... can anyone help me work out the differences between the different modern renders?
So i can figure out which sort i need, then hire a company which will use that one?
