Had a phone call yesterday off a friend of mine whos just moved into a house and has nightmare neighbors. Not looked at the job yet but she tells me its open plan and the wall where most noise comes through is the staircase wall.

Im not that clued up on sound proofing systems, so would be inclined to build a frame in front of problem wall fill with sound proof rock wool, board with acoustic and skim, Surely this would come out past the stringer ?? and narrow the stairs... Anyone got any suggestions other than ear defenders.

Would your basic blueboard accoustic plasterboard thats used on all new builds to any joining properties walls not suffice mate?

Failing that isnt there a sounblock render i thought in the bg range?

You have to do the whole side of the building and you lose space it's not worth it, take their money and do as you said but there better off just going round and telling them to shut up

Haven't a clue yet barryed, not looked at it, she said its a 1980's build, but theres a flat or something been built on the side, who ever is in there is coming back off the lash, and kicking off til about 04.00 in the morning lol. Any other wall wouldn't have been a problem, just not into interfering with the staircase. Theres a ceiling to lower also so ill sort that first then maybe put her off the wall for a while.

I have recently just moved in to my own house. A 2 bed terrace. On the Sunday morning of the 1st week I moved in I was woken by two screaming kids in the room next door. Could even hear them playing the playstation. I went out and got some 3x2, 50mm acoustic insulation and 12mm sound board and tack 2 layers of this. So far iv only put 1 layer up as not had time to finish it yet. I haven't heard them since :)

Problem is with it being the stair wall whatever you do the sound is still gonna come through the weak point which would be were the stairs are fixed to the walls. The above mentioned sound coat and dab sound boards is probably the best option if you knock it off. Then put foam/mastic in any gaps all floor/ ceiling or wherever before skimming. If the noise is really bad though your fighting a losing battle. Telling someone you would make it go away could end up being a headache when there ringing up saying they can still hear noise. If you do go the stud route don't fix the stud into the problem wall as this will leak noise, so you'd probably need 2 skins of board for strength which will add to the depth

stairwells are a nightmare, the sound block and sound coat is the way to go, but its a decent amount of work and costly..but for that quietness they seek, worth it..
