Hi all,

I have just been to look at a job where the customer lives in a semi and has a problem with the neighbor's baby keeping them up all night. Somehow we need to soundproof the adjoining wall in the bedroom.

I have never used soundshield boards before and am somewhat skeptical that a 12.5mm board will block out sound that gets through a brick wall.

Unfortunately I only have a maximum of 40mm to play with due to the fact that I have the doorway opening to think about, so I could double board it but there is no chance of being able to put up any stud wall to insulate.

Does anyone think my idea would work?

come off the wall abit 5mm and use gyplyner, stick a bit of insulation in between channel , 9.8 board , either tape it or scrim it , or go next door and kill the parents, child gets sent to foster home noise problem solved

Sound boards don't come in anything smaller than 12.5
If it's painted wall you will probably have to apply some sand based bonding agent before the parge coat.

i have tried this on a wall and it does not work, as the sound will travel through the ceiling and the floor

I used sound boards in my own bungalow, we had a rethink on the layout, & decided to stud the doorway from the kitchen to the back room, & put a doorway coming off the hall to make the 4th bedroom, a big one for my 7 year old, I used sound board I had left over from a job & must say was amazed! If we are in the kitchen, & he is in the bedroom calling us, we hear him calling from the hall/living room, as opposed to through the wall/stud! Good stuff I think!

Whichever route you take CJP, you must include a small disclaimer written into your quote at at least tell them that you will only be able to reduce the noise level and not eliminate it. I remember someone writing on a previous thread about soundproofing the percentages in sound loss you get from various systems. All the best :RpS_thumbsup:

How does it travel through the ceiling with a foot of loft Insulation sitting on top of the boards?.

where did you get the information about the loft? it could be a flat in a block, it may be a 3 story house, who knows?

in the loft the roof truss is usually very close to the blockwork of the gable end, and you may not be able to place any insulation between the truss and the blockwork

I just assumed as he said in his post that its a semi, that if wasn't a block of flats. And regardless of how tight the truss is to the party wall, there should be insulation over the trusses and not just between them. Assuming its a upstairs bedroom in a 2 storey.
