my client wants to plaster the ceiling in a steam room, is there any special finish i could use to ensure the ceiling stays in place

We skimmed two ceilings in the new kings rd last year both steam rooms, I thinks special paint was to be used and vents of course, mapie system would be more practical I think

no idea. morrocan waterproof plaster. its on one of the threads on here somewhere. bit like venetian. might be expensive

Tell him not to be silly, it should be tiled or mosaic tiled or rendered , Skim plaster is made from gypsum and is very easily damaged by moister/water/liquids...... :-)

looks good. save him money on tiles. on a ceiling .... :RpS_unsure: you might need a special substrate .... :RpS_unsure:

mosaics can also cope best with the expansion in the surfaces or he may need expansion joints, most plaster will crack in time.....

thanks everyone, client is quite demanding, so still little confused if honest, i didn't think it would be possible, but thought it may hve been possible, what is the mapei system?

Google mapei, I could do it and paste but people would shout at me, have to say though that gooner59 is well in tune with this stuff

i would not fancy doing it,, if he insisted he certainly would not get a guarantee,, and id like him to sign something saying i am not responsible , oh and hi mate

I did a steam room ceiling a while back. I don't know if you guys over the other side of the pond fancy mixing your own materials from scratch or not. We have a mix that's been around for a while that you put on in thin coats like a venetian plaster and then seal it with a carnuba wax. The mix is 2 parts powdered marble, 1 part lime, and 1 part portland cement. For the liquid add 1 part water to 1 part acryl 60 keep a lid on the mix or it will start to set where it is exposed to the air. I used a stucco mix for the base coats. You can sand this finish in between coats after it has set.

you have to believe to achieve, @Welshman. thats my personal mantra :RpS_thumbup:

believe to achieve, believe to achieve, believe to achieve ...

if you duck duck go / startpage it, there's quite a few sites about the tadelakt, geared towards bathrooms and steamrooms. its not something youd experiment with on someones expensive steamroom. maybe you could practice in your garage, first ... :RpS_unsure: or sub it out to someone who knows it and take a cut ....

am i correct in assuming the ceiling is going to be slightly curved mate to allow for water runoff?? i have done one like this but it was formed in stainless mesh with furring pieces then we rendered it. tbh mate it was a complete pain in the arse to do
very time consuming so cover your arse allowing for plenty of $$$$
