Stilts vs boards

Being old school I've never used stilts before. Did a ceiling today and boarded the entire room on tressles. I love being able to move about freely but it is a pain in the ar** setting it all up, especially as this was in an upstairs bedroom. TBH it is the only way I can do ceilings as I'm having to do all my own mixing too.
So, the question is........if you were doing mostly private work on your own would you bother buying stilts (which are bloody expensive) ?? I mean, you would have to take them off to go and make a mix or to get up the stairs, take a pi**, etc.
Wotcha reckon chaps?
 
I have three pairs in my lock up, not used them in ten yrs, problems with my knees, used to love them but there is danger with them, but on the right site with the right people and equipment, you can get a great finish on a ceiling, used to hate having to take them on and off for moving the van, going to the toilet etc..
 
ive got stilts but only use them for large lids or as your talking about bedroom ceilins i lay on first and second and flatten first with my hop up then i switch to stilts to flatten second and trowel up
 
Same as you never used em and get by on domestics with four purpose made fold flat trestles 2 lengths of 4x2 and at most 3 batterns. yes it's a pain setting up but putting on and taking off stilts would be just as big a pain.
 
Like you Scaffold all day long, it's the only way I know, captain.do get envious when I see the younger lads on stilts tho :RpS_wink:

Perhaps mine are older type, I used to work at a metre high yrs back and on tiled floors which was crazy,.
 
It depends on the height of the lid. I wouldn't use stilts on their highest setting of 30" because they are too unstable, instead, I prefer to use two adjustable hop ups from TeleSteps :-)
 
I mostly do domestics, often on my own. I got fed up moving scaffolds about, now its just one pair of stilts to load in/out. Just have to be organised before you start, and no trip hazards. I only get down once during whole set to knock up 2nd coat. Did do a ceiling today at 3.8m that definitely needed boarding out.
 
i actually ventured onto the highest setting on my stilts the other month :RpS_scared:, bit scarey getting onto them (needed steps) but it was ok once i was up
 
M.T Skywalker 2.0's .... best stilts around imo - literally seconds to put on and take off ... wouldnt ever board a room out again... tressle's etc give more chance of damage to floors, a ball ache to carry round in your van plus all the planks etc etc ...

Had mine 3 years ... paid for em selves 10 times over

Best walking motion around on these stilts and cause me no problems with my knees

Like wigan lad says - id refuse and walk away if i wasnt allowed to use stilts
 
Mmm. Think I will stick to my boards.
Anyway, stilts wouldn't have worked today as the customer left a few floorboards up. Would have been a long way down if one of them had gone through the hallway ceiling! :RpS_laugh:
 
So of the circus performers among us sorry i mean stilt users are you using the sky walkers or the cheapo ebay ones or maybe two baked bean tins and some string ?

would you reccomend buy cheap to try and then expensive or straight in for expensive ?

make them put the boards back down even if you wassnt on stilts and went through you cnt be held responsible

Its nicer to skim off a fully boarded deck. But I couldn't be doing with setting it up and taking it down again. Stilts you just carry in and off you go. Only use stilts on bigger ceilings now. Hop ups for smaller ceilings
 
ive tried the marshalltown ones and twos i found the 2s very clumsy feeling and heavy but get on fine with the 1s i just went straight for the marshalltowns but i did get them in a sale

Get the new M.T Skywalker 2.0's ... if you have poor balance or are a fat chunt then dont bother ....

Ive just got the faithful ones they are bang on think I paid £115 4 years ago and I wouldn't leave home with out them
 
Casper should have some forsale cos the last vid he posted on them he was absolutely twatfull...................:RpS_laugh:

ur a bit old to be starting on them now and there not for every one depends on ur balance and if ur afraide on them theres no point i have been useing them 20 years now i could walk up a stairs on them have a lot off time on them get on and off in seconds and was never told yet i could not use them on a job boards can be dangerours to i fell though a bad board two years ago and got 32 stichs in my leg
 
Oh I like band stands and boards, ie young man boards, order them up, labours bring them in, set them up, its a lovely raised floor, so comfy for me. But I did like the stilts back ten yrs or more ago, but not chasing a pound anymore ,happy with a bag of sand in my skyrocket nowadays.

But dose all the weight of the sand not just make your knee worse ?
