i am going to try the rolling hit day after tomorrow, never done it before always put 2 bags on and second coated with third bag, never even heard of it before. how many of you guys do this and do you have any tips.
well saying that since i have been on the private side of things am lucky if i get through 2 bags per hit haha :D

Its hard to do a rolling set on domestics, but with practice and prep its easy on site if you have a lab with you. :)

that,s not the point i want to master this technique. normaly i would go....

1. ceiling first hit
2. opposite walls second hit
3. other opposite walls third hit

but i want to go....

1. ceiling & wall first hit
2. three other walls second hit
3. pub

if anyone uses this technique then please add a post ;)

yeh thats what i do but i dont have to roll it for that... 4x3 room.. owt bigger and its three sets or you can still roll it, bang the ceiling on and flatten it, bang the walls on then top the ceili, flatten and top the walls, trowel ceiling up, trowel walls, have a ciggy, final, lunch, easy set in the afternoon, cash, pub ;D

depends on how knackered i am... :-\

what i do is ceiling , window wall, revels,
flatten then fresh mix second coat every thing!
then next hit is two walls flatten
then fresh mix
second coat two walls then use whats left two double coat last wall
happy days there is a product i discoverd a couple of years ago that stops the multi finsh setting and gives u a lot more time
its called free flo
its a render retardent u put 2 cap fulls into your water and swill it around with ur hand dont whisk it cos it will froth up and have the oppisite effect when u mix it mix a little bit lite it stays wet for ages and the good thing is if u get stuff that goes off in the bucket after u put ur hit on just add water and it comes bac lovly and can be used for second coat i was i was scared to try at first when another spread mentiond it but it works it just smells a bit funny the downside is somtimes the hits take a little longer while ur waiting for it to go off 1 tube should last u a month or 2 dont use it on ur last hit on a friday :D

you could spend your whole life chasing skimming though eh?...........could you ever be happy with a gruelling, labour intensive, hopelessly inefficient way to prepare walls for decoration? booo :(

nah but my girl reckons my obsession with machines and endless render talk is such a turn on!! she aint interested in hearing about old fashioned skimming that's all ;)

You see when I first started out I used to panic about setting times

but it soon became apparent that there is no panic, as soon as its 2nd coated it hangs for ages!!

I used to stick 4 walls on in one set first coat wall 1 and wall 2 drop back 2nd coat wall 1 and wall 2 1st coat wall 3 and wall 4 second coat wall 3 and 4

nice finish also.... I doubt I could do it now though.. I am so unfit now...lol

Danny

PS also what speeds things up is if you lay your coats on nice and neat, dont have to worry about it pulling in too much if it starts going pete tong!

rolling hit my arse. Stop making up terms for basic stuff. its plastering for f e c k s sake. do a 6 week course or a 4 year apprenticeship or something. Or maybe get a card (printed or otherwise). Its not rocket science

well said Irish spread .a plasterer who my mate get s in on his job puts ceiling and four walls on on a average sized room don't get a drop on him or the floor hardly no rolling hit for him :)hope to get on a job with him to try and improve a bit my self

I CAN THROW THE METERS ON WHEN SKIMIN BOARDS BUT OVER OLD WORK ITS TO MUCH FOR ME TO HANDLE TO FIRST COAT A WHOLE LIVING ROOM THEN SECOND IT AND IF ANY OF YOU GUYS RECON YOU CAN RESKIM A LIVING ROOM IN ONE HIT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE FINISHED JOB HAHA ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOW STARTED USING THE ROLLING HIT AND I DID RESKIM A WHOLE LIVING ROOM IN FIVE HOURS ;D NOT BAD FOR £380 CASH ;D ;D ;D

Mate i been plastering a long time and only ever done rolling hit 3-4 times. On large commercial jobs where i need scaffolding on 3m + high ceilings.
i did one on a golf club house 200+m rolling and snooker hall with 4 m high ceilings only 2 month ago 55 rolling set in sushi bar with 3 m high ceilings and over 30 lights smoke alarms air con units signs etc so i had to roll that as very time consuming and couldnt do it in 2 hits.
5x5 could be done in one hit if u control suction on the overskim or 2 if you have too.

you laugh but this spread was on a site at the same time as us, we were a 2 and 1 he was 1 and 1, in the time it took him to dryline and skim 2 flats we did 12. in one set he would do 5 or 6 reveals and that was it.

kirk, you havn't said how big the room is

about 5m x 5m mate, not a big room, i just want to practice the technique mate.

oh sorry mate i did that small room to practice like it sez mate, i could easy pop that room on in one but wanted to try the technique out first, the room i did today was about 6x8 with artex on the ceiling, put whole lot on with rolling hit. made up i found out about this way of skimming

what do you think kirk? did it go well? i wanna biiiiig ceiling to try it now. won't be doing any skimming for the next few months anyway

Oh i see mate...i didnt read all the posts.
When rolling set ,i try to do it in L shapes it makes it less obvious to the eye i find.
