I recently bought a a s*p*r*lex and thought I'd give it a go on a wall at home to see what its like. Ive just noticed there is a bit of tiger striping which I don't normally get. Would this be caused by using the flexible trowel at the same angle id use my normal trowel? Do I need to hold it at a shallower angle to avoid dragging? Or is it something else completely. I wet trowelled at the same time as usual, maybe I need to go on a bit later. Read that s*p*r*lex should get you on earlier so would be surprised at that any ideas would be great.

U might hitting it too late, this subject been covered here many times try to look it up on the forum

Probably not complicated, im just making it up as I go along trying to teach myself the basics so a lot of the causes and solutions for problems are a bit beyond me currently.

s*p*r*lex feels like a lovely trowel though evrn if I dont know how to use it....trust the germans to manage to over engineer a trowel

dirty trowel I have found... goetting on it too early as well :)

Dirty trowel could have contributed maybe not cleaning it off enough, might try just wetting the trowel instead of spraying the wall, that way cleaning it all the time too.

Hit your gauges late as possible as its getting colder.
As little pressure as possible with flex trowels I find.

Others might have different views !!

its all in the angle of the dangle and wrist action...........................oh and multi finish being infested with tiger mites

Lol, bad batch it must be...tiger mites infestation....mine dangles small, shrivelled and a little to the left...although I have the wrist action of a seasoned pro...only child bought up with internet filth....didnt come out of my room till I was 19

Thanks for the tips guys. I bought some manetic plaster which im giving a go at the weekend. Only one wall for my little boys bedroom, then gonna do some whiteboard or blackboard paint to make it all interactive. Hopefully that wall will come out perfect.

And yes the flex is brand new so will try holding really shallow, was my first instinct.

Plastering methods and tools did not change for years and years now all of a sudden there are a dozen different ways to lay on and trowel up skimming ,how many times can you reinvent the wheel. In my opinion it all just pandering to the new generation of must have the latest gadget plasterers and trying to bring some sort of technology to a job that is an artisan trade . keep it simple . or maybe I am just a bitter old has been who is stuck in the past.:(

Give a decent baker any type of flour, any type of tools and he will make decent bread. It's the same for spreads, I don't know if it's muscle memory, familiarity of material or just plain old repetition over years of use but I'm sure a good spread could produce good results with any trowel

I was lead to believe that tiger stripes are caused by an imbalance in chemicals in the finish but what do I know I'm just a dumb Black Country mon

So for example....

s*p*r*lex trowels are for plasterers who can use other trowels, but, prefer s*p*r*lex trowels.

I can do reviews of other products/brands if required. [emoji13]

The s*p*r*lex could be very handy in the case of break age or accident to skimming trowel, seems they are good to go out of the box. I will definitely be purchasing, I swear just thinking of a new 14" Marsha.... makes my elbow sore. Less antinflams. has to be a good thing.

Wet the trowel not the wall

All the times we have talked about stripes on here and never got a real answer. No one knows what is causing them. All I know is there was no stripes 15 years ago in finish and now there is.

Its simple , think about it, years ago we skimmed boards with board finish and carlite backing plasters with carlite finish then Gypsum had the bright idea of one finish for all and the problems started as it is either one nor the other and you get this tiger bollox when you skim PB's or over old walls but its ok on Hard wall etc. so the problem lies in the product not the man and don't start with all this angle of the trowel and how much water when troweling up fiasco that bods keep coming up with. This is just my opinion I am sure some one will tell me how wrong I am .

Probably the truest statement ever.Old spreads rule.

Your right pal.I questioned bg about 10 years ago and they themselves called it ribbing.A guy who used to work there told me the problem is either bad clay or they are over doing it additives. But surprisingly bg now say there isn't a problem strange that.
