Tiling on Hardwall

Hi there
I'm not a tradesperson -so would be most grateful for your help. We have a bathroom which is hardwalled but our tiler says that he cannot tile directly onto it and it should be dot and dabbed or plaster skimmed. If dot and dabbed with moisture resistant plasterboard, can you tell me how this can be applied to the hardwall. Our concern is that the tiles are very heavy (more than 20kg per sq metre including adhesive etc) so if the plasterboard is not applied properly, the plasterboard and tiles will fall off the wall, being a danger to anyone in the bathroom. Thank you
 
Tiling is not recommended straight on to hardwall. I would recommend you use GL1 studs and tracking system which will give you a true and flat surface to tile to. This will need a track installation on the floor and ceiling along with brackets to attach to the wall.

Lot of aggro if you have a small bathroom and only want 1or 2 walls to tile
 
I’d be more worried about weight of the tiles on top of finish rather than straight on to hardwall tbh ( altho I do set the hardwall normally)
 
Use to have a huge contract with a big high street brand doing all the bathrooms.
What a lot of plasterers and bathroom guys don’t no is if you tile on to neat bonding or hardwall it will eventually stain through the grout unless sealed.
Sealing is another days work for tiler plus the sealer probably costs more money to do a bad job and British gypsum also don’t recommend it.
Always skim it but also don’t over trowel it leave it rough literally lay it on and one trowel over it leaves a nice rough key for the tile to stick this what the spec use to be on most the very high end new builds in London too

BG test the pull weight on the backgrounds and this is calculated by the weight per sq m. Plasterboard is the best and skimming with a lightly brushed surface is next and finally a smooth finish skim, Tiling onto hardwall or Bonding is not recommend at all.

I’ve done hardwall /bonding loads of times that has been tiled on and never ever ever has it stained:rolleyes:

How would you know do you pop back a few months down the line to check?

So just to summarise cos I can’t be debating bollox ! bone dry hardwall/bonding that’s been sealed with sbr/pva, fully covered in waterproof tile adhesive and then waterproof grout , stains show thru the grout?? But not if it’s been finished?

Ffs you can’t pva or sbr before you use porcelain tiles. They stoped that about 10 years ago because it fails

Try putting you’re nail through hardwall the next day and do the same with multi hardwall is alot softer a tile will tear the surface off, multi even at 2mm is a lot stronger
 
Lol just went through my messages I haven’t been on here for so long and it’s funny reading the infractions I used to get haha
