to day while i wasin Travis looking around think wot can i buy i need to buy some kind of tool as i do, i went for a very very large TP crap trowel huge it was fort i could use it to flatten off..

first thing it went rusty after one use.. but i had no edge at all and dragged even with wet plaster...
so i went back to my gr8 worn in Sharpe as M/T and it flattend off so easy and nice (makes you realize how impotent a good trowel is!)

but i was thinking of gettin a better big trowel like a M/T pre sharpend one

dos anyone fink its worth having a huge trowel for flattening large areas?

HHHHMMMMM this is close to another great trowel debate ;D ;D what i will say is ......never used one ,never wanted to and never think i will ever use one .... but im old school dinosaur like ,prehistoroc spread so .... if you think it might come in handy go for it

ive seen people turn up use one trowel for putting on one for flattening and another for finishing what a load of bollox use one

It will work well mate , just as long as the guys that done the boardwork had a desnt level ... my advice would be spend the £ on your family mate ... if you do buy it i will give you one pound for it at xmas time

sounds like a gd deal.. ill give ita go..hey money all gd at the mo takein more than £700-800 take home a week and have done for the last 3 ina row and will do for the next 3 soo im ganna invest in sumit that may make my board work even quicker! U NEVER NO iv tryed loads of new thigs and some f um work so well like i tryed useing the radator brush for corners and its gr8! and i found out about bonding agents on this site.. couldt live with out now ect so im ganna try the big flattening trowel!

I have not trowel no, although I have worked with a spread who did and i cant say that it made me want to go out and buy one because it would make a big diffirence

I think it would do my head in having too many different trowels. I use is the same trowel for all my work apart from the midget trowel and leaf trowel for narrow areas.

no...... your right it probably dosnt make a big difference. it works for me though.

My mate uses a massive trowel to lay up and finish skim, I laugh at him cause it looks so awkward and he's no faster ...... it must put extra strain on your wrists as well ???

if anyone wants me 18 inch ill sell it cheap.its perfect nick, well worn in..i have wrists like a lady.and the elbows of joey decon ...sorry..i now have a really good pipe trowel and the 18 never leaves the van

the permashape trowels are 5" wide so if you got an 18 x 5 it's gonna be huge also there stainless steel so they (even thought they are supposed to be worn in) take longer to wear in, they jus make it harder work, i'v egot loads of trowels pretty much every size and i can gaurentee that when i'm skimming i'l probably use one of them but by the time i'm finishe i'l have my trusty old 13" carbon steel trowel back in my hand i've had it for about 10 years and it's like an old friend, i don't like stainlees steel trowels for skimming , carbon steel is much better

I use a 16 for laying on and it is quicker and use and 18 for flattening.... the finishes if used properlya re a lot better I think.

But in re skims I use my trusty 13 all the way.....

Having said that I have forgotton what my trowel looks like

18inch trowel very good for flattening large areas quickley.but as for laying on very cumbersome and most i have witnessed using them actually have no more material on the trowel than say a 14inch.better to stay with a trowel size you are used to.we use tyzack trowels that my farther managed to aquiere years ago.for pennys littrely of some shop that was going into liquidation.in the region of about 120 trowels for what was around 4pounds each.dont think we will ever use them in our life time.excellent trowels old wooden handles served us well and stand up to lime plasters well.to use anything on a daily basis above 13 on lime work would indeed lead to a short career.or use of prosthetic limbs.by way would not advice modern tyzack trowels.good name destroyed

Big trowels on domestic work ,just get in the way.there wont be a wall in the house where you got use a smaller trowel to get around a plug socket light switch or similar.
I sometimes use a big trowel on big ceilings when working on my own just to get it on fast and flatten, then revert back to my 11" for polishing.
They do have a use but limited use.
Buy one mate to satisfy ur thirst for spending but you wont use it often!!!!!!

Went into b&q the other day looking at mt trowels couldn t justify spending that money on a large trowel so still using my 11inch ragni still as thats what ive been used to after 26 years and all the work is domestic, and i have arms like a girl so the big trowels will prob kill me ;D ;D ;D

same pal...
i used 2 use a 14"...then moved to a 16"..then worked for company where they all used 18"....took a while to get used to...but used it for about 3 years now...and it works a treat...was abit dubius at first but its all gud now :)
its gd to hav a range of trowels...for the hard to reach places..espesh if ya using an 18"...they pop over very often :)
its just my thoughts thts all :)
