Using Extra Time

Hi after some advice got a big ceiling coming up i,ve got another plasterer to help me but
he,s not fast neither am i so i,m thinking of trying this extra time having never used it what do other spreads
do,

Do i put it in both coats total m2 is 65 approx and its going to be a lounge/dinner with bi-fold doors and i want it
to look good as i can get it.
i did some patching and making good in other parts of the property the customers builder was doing the main
areas as he priced for it.
Now he,s decided he cant do the big ceiling and told the customer to get me to do it seing as i done a nice job patching/making good.

I've never used Extra time but do use creme of tartar on big and or awkward ceilings. Assuming that they're pretty much the same; it will give you more time but if you and your helper are slow you're still going to struggle with 65sqm. You need to have a decent system not rush around like a headless chicken. I honestly think that having two spreads putting on the same ceiling can be worse than having one putting on and the other cleaning round, mixing and flattening.
 
Other than what above said joint it . If it scars slightly easy fill the piecing in job done
 
I did a big ceiling last year I split it into three sections then blended them in together using extra time really does help too
 
I put it in my first coat and get that on and then just carry on as normally with the second.... if you really struggle then a rolling set is probably better... or use both
 
Tried it both ways myself found if you just do it in first coat you’ll have approximately 30-45 minutes extra to get your first coat on and flatten then you need to decide if you go over with none added or if again you want more time , if you dropped it in your second coat too then again you’ll get an extra 30 -40 minutes on that coat too which could give you a total of 4 hour ish gauge mate
Either way just don’t let that builder guy see you drop it in mix then he’ll think your the don
 
Put it in both coats you will be fine, mix a bucket at a time then clean out for second coat. Start in the morning and take your flasks. (y)
 
First time using extratime thoughts on it was really good product if you want to put down a lot at the one time .......would not use all the time but if you wanted to bang out a big room brilliant stuff
 
If there's 2of you mix a couple of bags up one coat it on the other drop back and trowel then mix more for the one coating on then both trowel up wouldn't bother using extra time no need get ya prep right be done on 4hr

thanks vince i knew you have used it those extra minutes will help me no end.
the builder is off the job at the moment there,s been a lot of arguing (money)
i just want to get out of here got some nice thin coat work lined up soon as i,ve finished this job.

Mix 4.5 bags you start one end your mate the opposite.
One of you flatten it while one cleans up and mixes 2nd coat.
2nd coat the same.
1 finishes while other cleans up.

I used that, accidentally put too much in, 3 hours later I was still waiting for it to draw in!

Yeah I've done it myself mate. I honestly can't understand how some people say that it doesn't work? Cheap as chips and really useful on the sort of work we often do. Would never cross my mind on normal jobs but when doing big raked ceiling off tower scaffolding it's good.
 
I admit I'm a bit slow (not enough experience), but part of me thinks it's the multi flash setting with reading all the issues here, @JessThePlasterer told me how to use tartar, I just didn't get the ratios right, works brilliant though :risas:

I was initially looking at extratime but thought, chemicals are chemicals so there must be a non-branded version of it (I noticed extratime don't advertise what their chemical contents are)

The tartar works great, I need to stop fiddling though to let it set nice

hi Larry, can I ask how much tarter you used, say per bag.
