Hi all. New to the forum and am looking for some help.

I've just bought my first home and it is being refurbished at the moment. My builder has put up the plasterboards and is using mesh tape over the joints. Couple of questions

1. What sort of gap should he be leaving between sheets?
2. If the gaps are too big, should he be filling it with hardwall plaster? If this is wrong, what should he be using instead?
3. Is hardwall plaster appropriate as the first coat of plaster on plasterboard, before the finish coat goes on top?

All help much appreciated as this is all new to me!

I wouldn't recommend hardwall on plasterboard ,you might get away with just feathering in to the p/board but wouldn't do much more than that.

Sack him now!! If he's leaving big gaps he can't board, there is no gap required, and he shouldn't be using Hardwall on boards, get rid of him before he starts skimming with Peanut Butter!!!

There should be no more than a 3mm gap between plasterboards.
If he is doing all these things you are saying make him stop and find a proper plasterer.

It sounds like his boarding is poor, there shouldn't be any gaps big enough to need filling out before plastering.gap under 3 mm as mentioned is fine.boards should be tight and all joints taped then 2 coats of multifinish or board finish to applied to a smooth flat finish.anything less isn't good enough.

Fkin right witch hunt this. Remember lads, some clients are very anul and some are complete dicks, none of us have seen the work or know the full situation. Let's have some pics before someone make a decision based on some opinions off the net. Variety is important to any debate

Does not move furniture

No tea service
Leaves the heating on full blast
Etc

AQUAPANEL!!!

That should get Richard lords spider sense going mental and he will arrive so tell of suitable plasterboard gaps :RpS_thumbsup:

Update....

Hi guys,

i got kinda stuffed by the builder , threatened to walk off the job, etc and then agreed to finish off the plastering and call it quits.

6 months on and his dodgy work is starting to show. Plaster has blown on certain sections of stud walls, and small areas of ceiling which was re boarded. He never levelled the ceiling before putting the boards on so was using hardwall to level things off.

Ill try and post some pics a little later but in the mean time, could someone tell me what the chances of everything coming off are? I am just coming to the end of a mammoth 6 months of DIY and if things get any worse it will be soul destroying.

If he's put hardwall on the plasterboard ceilings it will more than likely fail. Don't slam your doors :RpS_thumbdn:

On stud work 3mm gap
on dot and dab boards should sit tight!!
again we have another builder who thinks he can board and plaster........arrrgggghhhh

If he had used bonding on the plasterboard u more than likely wouldn't be having any problems if what Hess put on has started coming off it more than likely all will
if it's coming off take it off hen best option is Pva then patch with bonding and skim but a patch is always a patch if once uve given it a coat of paint u can still see patch get some gyproc promix and smear around edge of patches and when dry lightly sand down
