Venting to flues


1. if the flues in the chimney breast are redundant and there is no neighbour with a chimney breast sharing the same structure, you may insert an air vent wherever a fireplace opening is being bricked up. This applies to all rooms irrespective of their usage whether on the ground floor or other floors. REASON there is no danger from escaping flues gases to the occupants. There might be inconvenience due to heat loss but this might be addressed at a later date if the air vent has adjustable louvers.
2 .If the flues in the chimney breast are redundant but there is a neighbouring property with flues that form part of the same structure do not undertake any works of alteration without the structure being tested for leaks and being advised as to the safety of your proposal.
3. if there are other flues in the chimney breast which are active that is burn any type of fuel – do no works of alteration without the structure being tested for leaks and being advised as to the safety of your proposal.

The reason for such caution is that altering the structure by removing a fireplace and maybe parts of walling behind of itself can loosen up flues in a way that permits leaks of gases from one flue to another or to rooms within the house. Bricking up without vents where a leak has been observed will simply increase the leakage at the next weakest point in the structure either within this house or a neighbours.

The person carrying out these works is legally responsible for the safety of anyone affected.

They might but you can claim you were innocent of knowledge of the defect. If you alter a fireplace opening and they die its you facing prosecution because you undertook work without the necessary safeguards.
 
I was having thoughts about this and then realised that the breast walls dont back onto each other in the house I live in so I dont think this could be a problem for me but the rest of you are screwed lol
 
i cant believe that someone locked the grant1966 thread which was fun, spesh watching the spunky getting wound up, but yet this thread carries on!! its wnak uninformative and argument causing

anyway what happened to the bloke with the crack ceiling, has he been on any other threads ?
