thanks paul .... two big houses, so I have all the mf, boarding, hardwall etc etc supply and fix internals only.

its the biggest for me so far and it runs right over xmas so I am chuffed to fook

nice one rich, glad to hear its not all doom and gloom this recession business, i know a qs for a large housebuilder and they seem to be doing fairly well here in the north west and he has hinted a few times that i should tender on some of there next developments instead of just being a subby for a subby. i just dont know if it is worth taking the plunge at the moment its 90 day invoicing and i can get credit at builders merchant with 90 day payment but its still an awful long time to go without any wages. any advice for a new guy thinking of getting invloved in bigger jobs?

go for it craig..... do as i did get a business overdraft, i walked into the rbs and within 30 minutes had a 15k overdraft which when i started contacting (last year) helped me cope with the 30-90 day terms. I also took a friends advice and pay everything I earn into my business account and I pay myself £300 per week so if I takr home £1000 a week I am saving £700 p/w etc etc. Its amazing how quickly it builds upthen if you have no work for 6 months or you need a new van or whatever you can relax and do it with no stress !!!

sounds like a good idea rich girlfriend works for rbs so will consult with her later, deffiantly worth thinking about because at the moment whilst site work is slowish i wouldnt be laying out for materials on too many houses before 90 day invoice period comes around.

The 90 day term payment, be careful rich.........Can be the start of road to ruin!!

Just don't gamble what you can't afford to lose, that way if it does go wrong it will hurt but not kill you.

All I'm saying Oasis is that if your working for firms you don't know well and are supplying loads of materials it's a risk, and not worth bankrupting yourself over is it. I've seen it happen to many times, to big to quick often = disaster.

As above...........Say 3 spreads working for you, say 500 a week each,=1.500 x 12 weeks (3 months) = 18000, lot of money to lose, pos mats aswell. Most of these firms which want these terms have bad cash flow, they survive on the money they owe you, and everybody else !. Probably limited as well .

nice one rich i think you have got to take a bit of a chance in order to make the big time.do they still hold onto retension on some sites cause it was that what screwed me in early 90s on a site near barnet,10% for six months after end of job, price was supply +fix cornice ended up having to level up ceilings before i could fit it .also i signed penalty clause that i couldnt hold up painters etc ended up paying 2 fellas to help me keep in front ,thank f..k i didnt have me kids then ,i just used to get all the shite jobs thinking[this will be the one]but my mates done the same sorts of things and most of em have done bloody well out of taking the chance ..

I did a job last xmas for a big firm, paid up no problem but didnt tell me about the 12 month 5% retention, it wasnt a problem as there was quite a bit of profit on the job but it looks like I am due a cheque in the next few months for £800 or so :)
