Wheres the work ethic gone?

Got locked into our job today ,the keys are outside in a safe but someone chubbed the front door ,couldn't get at the sand that my lad needed to bring upstairs

Don't think it's age related really, I've worked with old fellas that were lazy and uninterested equally I've worked with young uns that are same.
I'm sure there were lazy sods when the romans were here.

Trouble is if you ain’t on a price but still work like a dog for some builders they don’t respect u more I don’t mind mucking in and lifting and carrying but it’s some builders who expect the world on a day rate,2 hits should be fair on a day rate imo
Defo . 2 hits should be enough no matter what . One regret i have is when I started n enjoyed job I thought note of working 6 while late . Back n knees paying for it now

I see this in most people in the construction industry under 35...sorry if you're not one of them!

Geezer I work with and I both have keys to job, when I get there first I'm inside cracking on. When he gets there first he sits in his car and waits for me.

On day rates at the moment and supposed to work til 4.00 yet if he finishes a gauge at 3.00 he wont do anything else saying 'they've had their moneys worth'. Me I'd rather bead up or something for the next day.

I just don't get that lazy arse way of thinking. It bugs the hell out of me.

I think it's important to be straight up and straight down about what's to be expected both ways.

When it's my dime, I make it clear that they are to be there in time to begin work at the time we agreed to begin - pre-fcuking-cisely, if you please. If people are early enough, I'll make tea/buy breakfast. I will extend them the same courtesy by never asking for one minute (literally) of their time at the end of the day, no matter how it's gone for me. I have a clear target for the day and people find that I'm a lot nicer person when it looks like we will achieve it. You'll still get your rate but if I decide it's your fault that we didn't achieve what I hoped for, then we'll probably not be seeing you again.

I expect this when I'm paying and when it's me with my hand out for cash. There isn't much that makes me angrier than bosses who flip about being late but then steal my time come knock off.

If you are on day rate and your mate is sitting on his arse at five to eight, then he's every right. If you're late and you find him sitting on his arse, then the pair of you want sacking.

But some builders I’ve come across you do 2 hits and finish at 3 bead up scrim up get ready for morning and they got arsey about me leaving even though didn’t stop one time I done 3 hits while 3 Chippie’s built some steps and took them 3 days so 9 man days yet said to me I was short changing him it was laughable

That's because we're not looked upon as a proper trade.

Them lads with no ethic getting paid the same, whos the fool ( I like to think I graft, just a statement not starting a fight)

It’s got progressively worse over last 10 years imo i remember turning up at an extension on a weekend with blokes I was in a gang with and they was actually pleased to see us and know we would get an extension done over a weekend now everyone seems to be a Plasterer or knows a Plasterer and back in past they had give it a go ect plus the rise of the multi trade has killed it as well yet I’m to meet a multitrader/diy merchant that can actually Plaster I think me at 33 are one of a last generation that done an apprenticeship cos when I started we was all 1 trade people and that’s how it should be the amount of times I’ve been asked if I can hang a door or tile or do such n such I probably could but wouldn’t be quick at it and wouldn’t feel comfortable charging for it,plus I don’t think my bag of rust is up to hanging a door anyway lol
