Working for builders

Seen a few comments about people not liking to work for builders. What's everyone's experience of working for them? Why are they not good to work for?

Builders are the best people to work for, they pay on time, pay good rates, let you start or finish at whatever time suits you, provide food and buy you beers when you're working away, give you varied work, have everything on site ready for you and don't expect miracles.

Plasterers only moan about them for two reasons. 1) They don't want the word to get around about how good it is or other plasterers will try to muscle in. Or 2) They're not very good and a builder has told them to clear off.

Just ask @Nisus or @Olican and don't believe what the moaners say when they come along in a minute, they're just trying to put you off.

I only work for one builder, well technically 2 as they're partners, done the odd job for others in the past but they either only use you because their regular spread is busy, want it doing for f**k all or the jobs nowhere near ready everytime

we do work for 2 builders that we have had to train up regarding when to make payments. we have also had to stop them from doing prep work and tacking as like most builders they are ham fisted useless people. the old ladies love them and they have always got sausage and mash on them.

Building contractors are worse than general builders. If I get an enquiry from a building contractor and I can be bothered to go and have a look, I tell them what I want regards getting it ready, and when I expect payment. If they can't comply, then f**k'em. They can find someone else.

Just been to look at a house I'm starting shortly to see how they were getting on, starting it in about 2 weeks.
They have only gone and boarded the ceilings on joists at 600 centres, ceilings will be like the sea by the time I get there!!!!
What's the minimum requirements regarding centres of joists? 400?

Must be a new build ?
That's what the roof trusses come in at nowadays , not that I do new builds

400 or 600 depending on the joist type and size. However, if you're fitting them at 600 centres you should also fit noggins and/or racking ply both of which would stop the sagging issue. Sadly it takes a bit of time and costs a few quid so ......

I'm fixing noggins on 600 centre trusses at the moment. You could use 15mm board and not require a noggin, but I wouldn't risk it.

Same old story, anything to save a few quid, dog rough work, same fella will no doubt be eyeing up every reveal in the place!!
I know what's coming regarding the ceilings,
'Can you not just fill out a bit where the joists are'
Ffs

I very rarely work for builders, working for Larry aka I'magoer aka Larry da Length was an exception. He had the site site perfectly prepared and all went without a hitch, apart from being highly flirtatious and a tad sexually aggressive he was a joy to work with

We only do regular work for one builder. Their sites are usually a sh!t hole with half blocks/roof tiles/cuts of timber everywhere, scaffold never set up right, block work a mess, probably like every other builder. However unlike most builders they pay very well and within one week of completing the job

Rather than just slag the aforementioned builder & with others mentioning payment, that's the one thing he's spot on with, pays me when I want, or sometimes if it's handier for him, before the job is half done!!!
Beat that!

Mines took a select few sub contractors out for an all expenses paid 3 course meal including drinks at christmas:bailando:

My old boss used to tell me "you'll never get rich working for builders lad." I've tried to prove him wrong but he was right. They'll squeeze every last bit of profit out of the jobs leaving very little for the subbies/plasterers. They've all been to the same school of bullshit aswell. "I'm not making much on this one." Blah, blah, blah. "I need this one doing cheap" absolute shite!!!

Spot on fella
