iv only been plastering for 10, but iv seen some good blokes older than me struggle like hell for work good plasterers too.

i know a guy who is a terrible skimmer, however, he could sell snow to the Eskimos and has had up to 30 guys work for him on various sites.

Depend where you are in the Country. Can't imagine the north east getting decent money.

And again true labour only (man and a bag of tools) or labour including Ritmo, van and all equipment but materials?
Labour only site work, actually ten years ago it was 150

as I bleated on about in another post at the top of the forum, i recon this will be my last year in the rendering game for various reasons.

im one of them sados that genuinely like there job, but getting more and more messed around for payments site snagging etc,and its getting worse, that and I don't want to be the oldest renderer in the yard one day with nothing to show for years of graft.

Its a mugs game now....as in

Anyone who looks into the building game will try plastering as an easy route. You don't need a proper qual that will stop you working unlike a plumber or spark etc.
Family will always let you practice they all want stuff done. Then you go do in box rooms here and there on the cheap until you advance tour skills. They all they plastering coz they see the quals of the other trades as walls in their way.

There are loads of **** spreads about for this reason but a dodgy finish never killed anyone

That's how i feel.

Let other people buy your property for you and give you some income as well. Area's that are always in demand will be safe bets as the rental market comes and goes. Me thinks the buy to let market is now saturated with the help from homes under the hammer. But when mortgages become easier and people start to buy again the bottom will drop out and many landlords will be selling. Good rental area's will always have demand in good times but the poorer area's might struggle.

Here in Sheffield its S6, S10 and S11.

Tbh john most trades are on the same money, the ones that are practiceing on their mums house or whatever are full of **** mate it's all lies they say that on here to get advice

Iv never understood people that come on here for advice, ok, maybe for specialist works, once in a blue moon.

but some of the questions are the most basic things any decent spread would have picked up through a few years of graft

yields are still good pushing 10% in cities in west Yorkshire,
you still cant get a good mortgage even at 5% deposits your getting clobbered by the rates, especially as they climb up over the next year or so, that and not enough houses coming on the market etc I recon yields are going to hold strong. you need a good chunk of change to get a good rate I pity self employed lads now since self certs gone , I wouldnt have got one these days for what I got, if at all.

I wish no one got one that's why we're screwed, the rental business is set to look pretty healthy though as the rest of us are ****** good for you lot who are in the game

Take the piss out of them simple

I have won a few jobs this week and have a few insurance jobs to crack on with, the good and bad of it is one customer told me I was the most expensive quote, £100 more than the nearest, but he liked my set up and wanted me to do work, the flip side, I wasn't expensive, so what are these other guys playing at.

it might be the time of year as rigsby said in another thread, it's swings and roundabouts.

one day it's the worst jobs in the world, the next, it's the best

Im generally 500-600 dearer on a 3 bed house after leaving bits off knowing if I was to charge for it I wouldnt get it

The £100 dearer was for a staircase, the last full house I prices I was near £1000 more than the other guy, I think they paid £900 for near a full domestic re skim with a few ceilings thrown up (boarded)

The lads in my area who look as they have done well all have wives in a good job including me. My wife earns more than I do and thats just in administration. If you are the bread winner then it must be tough. Two wages are better than 1.

You can't have kids then or one income goes on child care and no one sees the kids unless there tired and in a piss I'd rather be poor and happy

Mothers and mother in laws who live nearby and are retired comes in handy. My wife had 5 years off then she went back once my lad was in school.

I've got 3 kids mate and both parents work........ We're ****** basically lol, or I am all girls bring it on :RpS_crying:

I disagree mate. Plastering is predominantly measured works so although day/hr rates are there about the same. Other trades will be more likely to be getting the safe hourly rate and plasterers won't. 90 percent of plastering will be done on square metreige and with those prices half what they should be it means were underpaid and will just be pushed to do more and more work to match that hourly rate.

I know its different all over but here rates are half what they were on 2006 probably comparable to what you could get in the early 90s

That is disgusting and no one gives a flying either. Its all well teachers striking because they only got a 1% rise and rightly so but will plasterers losing 50% ever make the news?

It is when supply exceeds demand. In 2006 it was the other way around. Then when I got an enquiry some would say it is hard to get anyone to quote everyone's busy but now if punters want 6 quotes they will get 6 quotes.

I have a long term spread friend who in 2007 said he needs £120 labour only a day or it's not worth it. Now he is £80 a day and grateful.

When times are good it attracts trainees but when times are bad we are over staffed.

It's not just us, my mate's a bricky and he reckons his metre rate is almost half what it used to be.

My mates a Bricky and like me is rained off today, he told me that he keeps losing work to a lad that charges the same as him but for 2 men :RpS_scared:

I've noticed in last few years that builders are getting rougher by the minute as well, everything is about profit and plastering comes in under that category , it doesn't matter if you have been doing it 30 year or 5years cheapest gets job, so the 30 year spread will win if its float and set on specs but 9 out 10 its dot n dab and every man and his dog thinks he can do this to some sort of standard ,there is a need for trade standards, union or minimum hourly rate to equal things up , I have no chance of competing against anyone who signs on(same for all spreads) . I have a few builders I work for, but only one I would have work for me on my houses, its a crap work world were all in at moment, no money but still spending on there houses but its cheapest everything, yet expect top quality ,you cant buy a rolls Royce for price of a mini .
