Would I be right to ask for this to be reskimmed?

Thanks all. I've been back again today to check it all and there are a few problems on pretty much all the walls, although some are passable (or seem so, prior to the mist coat). The ceilings also have some minor crazing and all have patches of bumps, which I suspect will show up more with paint? There are lots of minor indents/splotches of plaster which just seems a bit shoddy. The corners generally seem very rough, and the plastering around architraves is pretty uniformly terrible.

Potentially the worst of it is that he damaged one of the ceilings while he was working and said he would replace the plasterboard before he skimmed. Checked it today and he didn't replace the plasterboard, he just skimmed over the crack - and then when the crack showed through the skim he's just PVA'ed it or something?? It's bizarre.

He seems like a decent guy and I don't want to get into a conflict with him, but I also don't particularly think we had opted for a 'cheap' option (although would be open to being told otherwise) as we're supposed to be paying him over 7 grand for this (Wiltshire, small 3 bed house, walls and ceilings skimmed - although not all of them, e.g. the bathroom and some areas haven't been done yet).

We haven't paid him yet, I'll see what he says tomorrow. I'm unsure that he's going to be able to fix all of this. I guess my next step is to get quotes from other plasterers to fix it, and then deduct that from what I pay him?

If I was u I’d fall out with him big time, do not pay that chancing cunnt a penny. U been done big time. 7k to skim a small 3bed Seems on the high end which u wouldn’t mind if he produced flawless work. There’s more dug ruff Casper type work on here all the time lately lol

Kick him out now and don’t pay a single penny for that pile of dog s**t!!
That job has not been done by a fully qualified and competent plasterer.

if I lost my mind and did that to someone’s house I wouldn’t expect payment

it’s also a horrible job going over someone else’s rough work which will be included in the price of whoever fixes it.

He didn't really fight me on it but I am sceptical that he's going to able to fix it. They admitted they'd struggled with the heatwave and said they're "forgotten" to fix the various issues before leaving.

I told them I'd be getting someone else to check it/do a mist coat to see what it looks like before we pay him anything, so I'm getting another few plasterers out to quote on the remaining work and advise on whether it's an acceptable the standard/cost of putting right. If any of you can recommend anyone near Salisbury I'd take recommendations! Unluckily we're just moving to the area so I don't have connections to ask.

Well! Bloody hell did that take a turn for the worse today. Plasterer called me this afternoon to say they'd managed to get in earlier than expected and fix the various problems. I said this was great news, and that we had a plasterer coming to look on Monday and we'd get that mist coat sorted as soon as possible. He mumbled something about part payment and I said we'd happily sort it as soon as someone had taken a look.

He then said, "well I guess I'll change your locks then!". I was completely taken aback as I think I'd been pretty reasonable and up to this point he'd been acting fairly amenably about it. He's now sent me an increased invoice (he's increased it by £300 to cover all the 'complementary' work he included) and says he wants to be there when the other plasterer is checking his work! He's also written a bunch of legal nonsense (apparently I implicitly agreed to all sorts of contractual terms that are only being mentioned now). Obviously, I'm not tolerating this kind of threatening behaviour. I've had our locks changed immediately. The bizarre thing is, it sounds like he has actually gone back and cleaned up the work a lot. Complete madness to then act in this way, I've lost all empathy for him.

I get the sense that there's quite a bit of bluffing and brinksmanship going on with all this, but please, for goodness' sake, don't cave in and don't give this chancer 7K - he hasn't earned it - if anything, he's cost you money because the next spread is going to have to hack off a lot of his bad work. If he loses out of the job, then that is due to his own bad workmanship and it's NOT your fault.
He shouldn't have quoted you for professional plastering services and he shouldn't have made a bloody mess of your house.

Apparently he's smoothed out all the rough corners/filled the chips and cracks etc, but the ceilings look much the same (I'm not sure what he could do about those to be honest). He argued that because it was skimmed over artex, it was always going to look like this. I find this baffling because initially I had assumed that the ceiling needed boarding and it was him that said it would be fine to skim. I'd assume the worst of the crazing might have been filled. I can't imagine he's managed to neaten up the architraves but I'll have a look.

That is a case of a chancer pretending to be a professional plasterer, and expecting you to pay mug's money without realising you're being had.

I assure you, you don't need to be nervous about standing your ground with that appalling workmanship. You're in the right and he's in the wrong, plain and simple.
